I'm replacing my stock exhaust and I'm wondering what's the difference between a hi-flo Y pipe system and a dynomax catback exhaust system?

Which one would you suggest I purchase?

Pros, cons?

The hi-flow y-pipe is the part of the exhaust that attaches to the exhaust manifolds and includes the catalytic converters. The y-pipe ends at the spring ******. A cat-back system includes all the exhaust tubing after the spring ****** including the mufflers. Two completely different parts of the exhaust. I didn't notice if you had an MTX or ATX but for the MTX a hi-flow y-pipe is the best HP gains you are going to get out of the exhaust.

Welcome to the SHOforum! The catback and the y-pipe are the 2 parts that make up the exhaust. There are many different kinds of each you can get. Good luck with your decition, and to get more info, just do a search and you will find more than enough!

I have a 94 ATX.

So basically, a Dynomax Cat-back just replaces certain parts of the exhaust system and not the WHOLE thing whereas a Hi-Flo Y Pipe would replace everything pertaining to the exhaust.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, I just bought my SHO last week and it only has 73k miles on it and I want to add stuff to it.

Thanks.

Hey Jy94SHO,

I have a 95 MTX which I am replacing the exhaust on very shortly (Largely due to the fact that I failed my inspection because of it). Like you, I too am considering using the dynomax cat-back. You should look at the topic I just started like 2 weeks ago: Dynomax Exhaust. You'll find that Mash95 also gave me some advice as well as a few other members.

A Hi-Flow Y pipe is basically just what the name says. After the exhaust come off the engine, it attaches to the Y pipe to bring each side together as one single exhuast. Then you have the catalytic converter followed by the spring ****** (looks like a long, metal, meshy tube). What I just described is the Y pipe section you asked about. What dynomax makes is a complete exhaust that attaches to the spring ******. It includes the resonator, pipes, mufflers, clamps, and hangers. From what I've checked it runs about $300 give or take.

So....what you replace is probably dependant on what exactly you want out of your car. If you want as much extra HP as possible you'll probably want to buy both a Hi-Flow Y and the Dynomax (or similair) pipes. Right now I'm just looking at doing a cat-back, but after thinking about what masho95 had to say about the HP gain for MTX's, I may just consider doing both at this point, if it's not that much more $$$. Of course, as masho95 pointed out to me in the discussion I started, it might just be better and /or cheaper to have the whole thing done by a custom exhaust installer.

Watch for him. He definately knows his sh#t.

Thanks,

Timmy

Here's my two cents. I had a bunch of stuff done at Performance Plus in Madison, WI on my '93 ATX. They did a great job and I used their advice for the best combination of bolt-ons. I'm very happy with the results. I'm sure you can find a good place in your area, too, unless you want to try all this yourself. Not me, though. I left it to the professionals.

Anyway, starting from the front:
1. Replaced the stock air filter with the K&N insert. It's quiet, but at 1/2 to WOT, it sounds awesome. (On the other hand, my '95 MTX has the Sho Shop cold air intake with K&N filter and it's very loud, even at idle and normal driving speeds.)
2. 73MM MAF
3. Superchip.
4. Performance Plus Y pipe
5. Dynomax Catback system

The whole system sounds just great. It's not intrusive at normal throttle. Has a nice low purr or rumble to it. However, give it some gas and whoa! In fact, I hardly ever listen to the stereo system. I prefer just listening to the car. And the increase in performance was also nice. In fact, now I have to start thinking about getting the tranny bullet-proofed, because of the added strain.

No they y-pipe doesn't replace everything exhaust related. The y-pipe is attached to the engine via the exhaust manifolds. Then the 2 catalytic converters are on the y-pipe and the y-pipe ends at a spring ****** joint. hi-flow y-pipe Here's a picture of the y-pipe if you scroll down the page a bit. After the y-pipe is the rest of the exhaust called the cat-back because it includes everything back behind the catalytic converters. The cat-back is the majority of the exhaust piping including the resonator, and mufflers. ****** joint This on the left side is the ****** joint and you can see the first resonator I have which goes around the black shifter box. Second resonator And this is my second resonator further down the line before the exhaust goes over the suspension. Stock SHO's only have 1 resonator but I added a second one to eliminate the raspy noise that the hi-flow y-pipe creates. I hope this cleared things up a little for you.
