hello sho forum!
ive been lurking around for the last few months, and ive decided to introduce myself!
i accidentally bought a 93 atx, trying to buy the cheapest running car from CL (750, with advertised "sticking lifter" haha). having no idea what i had gotten into, i drove it home, did some research, and got exited. then i looked up part prices...

jump ahead 4 months, and its been sitting in my driveway for 2 months with "an electrical problem" (corroded battery cables). the real issue though, i knew it needed a 60k, and timing tensioner work, that i couldnt afford to work on.

jumping to the present, its in my garage, receiving a slow and painfull 60k. right now im working on the rod bearings, with a full front end up next on the list. chipping away at it with a few hours daily, afterwork, and the best energy of my saturdays.

i only drove the car for 2 months, but i love it already. and i love this forum. all questions ive had have been answered by the search bar, and the atmosphere here is great! i hope to someday join you guys at a convention, and to become a contributor in time!

and most of all, i hope i have the patience to work this car into prime condition (and hope im not too late for the party)!

thanks for the support this far, and i look forward to posting good news (or atleast selling it to one of you guys when i give up)

from the NW,
Ty

Welcome in! There are a good bit of Forum members up in your area. If there is anything you can't handle you might find someone willing to help out.

Once you've worked on these cars a bit it gets easier and easier. Start accumulating SHO tools. I have a shelf in my shed dedicated to everything I'll need to perform a 60k. When you get to the point that you can pull the intake in 5 minutes you are doing good!

Wish me luck...I'm going to haver Babe's tranny fluid changed, it isn't black or really bad smelling, just pretty dirty I'd say and sometimes hard shifting when down shifting. I'm sure it's been too long, but again, it's not burnt and I think should work out fine.

ill post a few pics later on today!

it really is a shame that these get crushed, but then again, these being so niche kinda makes it fun! discontinued parts arent so fun though...

thanks for the welcomes and the well wishes!

my advice is (especially on the 93s) to not change the automatic's transmission fluid. there is more chance of loosening some piece of crap that will end up in some valve or orifice somewhere to the destruction of the trans than there is value in new fluid - especially if it is not burnt smelling. the general rule is that if you have not had the routine atx services done every 30k, then just leave it alone till it dies. I don't know how many times people have changed the oil and filter in a good-working atx only to have it fail within a short time.

Welcome! It's nice to see that the SHO community is growing up here! I was wondering what happened to that car when the ad disappeared and I'm glad to see it didn't go to the crusher :)

What part of Washington are you in?

Get using it on a regular basis. That will do more towards making it reliable than spending a lot of money on work that may not be needed.
Fix things as you can afford them, and plan on doing most of it yourself.
The good news is - these cars are extremely dependable, once the issues are ironed-out, and they are driven continuously.
I bought an 89 that had absolutely no work done on it during its 200,000 mile life; and it was my best fuel mileage, best performing SHO that I have owned, and the only one to pass emission tests with no prepping. I did the plugs / wires and valve cover gaskets and left it at that, and made it my dedicated winter car, as the car was in terrible shape body wise. All my kids learned to drive on it and punished it terribly.
Good luck and welcome.
