REPORT: Ford preparing cops for life after Crown Vic, has police sample Taurus
by Chris Shunk on Aug 28th 2009 at 11:30AM

Quick quiz: What vehicle transported Paris Hilton to prison? If you answered Ford's Crown Victoria Police Interceptor, you took the easy route and you were correct. The older than thou Crown Vic accounts for about 85% of the 75,000 police vehicles sold each year – a market where styling, amenities and new safety features have little to do with the vehicle's success.

The CV's body-on-frame construction helps the ubiquitous cop cruiser stand up to the punishment doled out by the guys and gals in blue. Body-on-frame platforms are generally also easier to repair, and anyone who has been in a police parking lot can plainly see that these vehicles take a big-time beating in the name of public safety. The CV is also rear-wheel drive for better handling, it's large enough to fit even the biggest of felons (and cops), and its column-mounted shifter enables the fuzz to have plenty of room for a laptop. But alas, the Crown Vic is also older than dirt. We'd joke that Henry Ford himself had a hand in the creation of the CV, but chances are that Henry II actually did, and he retired as the head of the Blue Oval when Pong was state-of-the-art video gaming technology.

According to The Detroit News, in June, Ford hosted police personnel from some of America's biggest cities to discuss the future of the police cruiser. The Dearborn, MI-based automaker told the police departments that the Crown Vic would be gone by 2011. That's bad news for departments like the LAPD, which has a shop set up specifically to deal with the CV. Some police departments told the Motown newspaper that rear-drive vehicles like the Charger can't hold up to the abuse of police work. Others are looking into the Impala, though the front-drive Chevy hasn't gained much traction with law enforcement. One ray of hope could come in the form of the Carbon Motors E7 purpose built police cruiser, but it isn't quite ready for prime time yet, and it's likely to be significantly more expensive than the equivalent Blue Oval cruiser.

Ford is in a bit of a predicament in that the Crown Vic has the police (and cab) market to itself and, as Ford President Mark Fields points out to The Detroit News, the CV gives Ford a presence in just about every municipality in America. One vehicle that Ford gave to police to drive during their stay in Dearborn was the new Taurus, which is almost as big and roomy as the CV, but with far more safety tech, improved fuel economy and the (costly) option of an Ecoboost V6 under the hood in the form of the SHO model. The Taurus may not be the ultimate answer (at least it won't be outrun by a Toyota Camry or Nissan Altima), but Ford insists that it isn't giving up its police share without a fight.

You could at least credit Autoblog with the article. Sheesh.

But good catch nonetheless!

It's stupid of them to just drop the Crown Vic. Police keep buying them because that's what they're set up for, if they drop it and try to push a new car, what's stopping the police from getting an Impala/Charger/etc instead?

They should just keep updating the Crown Vic, like they've been doing for years. There's not really anything wrong with the design.

it'd be interesting if they could update the CV with an ecoboost 4 cylinder engine (240 hp/240 ft-lb isn't far off what the old 4.6 2V's got in the early 90s) and an ecoboost 6 cylinder for highway pursuit and stuff. If the SHO gets 17/25, i'd bet the CV could get more with a little less weight and no fuel sucking AWD drivetrain. Maybe 18/27 or something? That's a lot better than a charger V6 and a ton more power. I'd think an ecoboost 4 could top that, and still provide as much power as the Charger 3.5L. A diesel might be a better choice though since it gives them good highway range, reliability, and lots of idleing time. Jag V6 TT diesel!

well that's fine, and it's not a huge deal, but generally, when you copy/paste an article written by somebody else, you should disclose where the article came from as well as the author. You did disclose the author, which is good, but had I not read the same article on autoblog, I never would've known what website it came from. I say this for two reasons: 1) it's good etiquette and helps avoid claims of plagiarism, and 2) one of the global mods is a columnist for a website and he might take personal offense ;).

Back in Michigan ... again.
Uh...

He posted an article. Big deal.

I appreciate your concern, but I think everyone knows I'll speak up if something needs to be said. Or even if something doesn't need to be said :)

I'm kind of sad to see the CV go away. Cops seem to love them for their durability and relative ease/low cost of repair. There's also such a huge market of police gear designed for the CV already. I can foresee the Taurus being a more expensive car to buy, outfit, and repair. And they probably won't get the same amount of hours out of them.

I would have liked to have seen the CV updated with a 3v 4.6 and either a 5 or 6 speed auto. Perhaps even a 3.5/3.7 Duratec.

Oh well. We can always hope for a stripped down Police Interceptor Taurus with the SHO drivetrain. It would make for a great used buy for all those guys that could care less about heated ass-massaging seats, overhyped Sony sound systems, and other various gadgets. How would the column shifter look though?

Ford has such a huge stake in Police cruisers I bet they already have strippid down versions of the Taurus with full cop interiors. Probably got them with radios and full gear already. This market is too big to let go.

Probably another reason why the Taurus got so much bigger.

the carbon motors is just a done up 300c/charger look at the body lines...although the turbo diesel is a brilliant idea in a cop car, lotsa torque and good for idling/running at long periods of time
