It will always be asked as long as this forum is alive so here is something for the search function to churn up in the years to come:

Which sounds best, rasps less, costs the least, works best, looks best is a matter of opinion. This is what I have and am liking alot:

Catless Y-pipe from SS....why? its cheap and mandrel bent. Got mine on the group buy for 185 shipped. Later got another off ebay for 190.00 shipped. It beats any price for a pipe that has cats.

Dynomax catback from summit racing 256.00 shipped : If you install just this system with above mentioned y pipe, you will have about 450 invested. It will rasp. What is rasp? Well with this system, between 3800 and 4300 rpm, it will be loud enough to **** people off, sound like ****, but it will have a noticebable increase in performance.....at least I noticed in mine. Below and above these rpms, the car sounds awesome....at startup, more heads will be turned than you think cause it it all throat. But, it is raspy in the common city driving as you are always in that rpm range, so what do you do?

Simple: buy an 18 inch magnaflow resonator from www.hottexhaust.com and the overall transformation is amazing. Rasp is practically nill....I say practically, because I had no magnaflow for exactly 2 months so I got quite an ear for it. Now it is throaty, with very very slight rasp for maybe 100rpm near 4000. Not really noticeable under bridges etc.

total investment: 500 bucks...plus labor to install it, (mine was 150). I'm in a no salt area so I will have this system a good long time in AZ.

That is a great setup for both sound and power if you do it right and get the resonator. And you cant beat the cost! Do you know if and where we can still buy the catless Y-pipe now that SHOslop is no more?

When it comes time for muffler replacement I would recommend Summit Turbos. Please go to www.summitracing.com and use the part # SUM-630222. They are 2 1/4 offset inlet/outlet mufflers for only $14.75 each! You can also get very nice looking tips and they are part number SUM-690051. They are 8 inches long and are stainless steel and are actually more expensive than the mufflers at $22.95 each.

Here is one forum member's (northernSHO) opinion of them:
The summit turbo mufflers do not sound ricey in my opinion at all. They have a very nice deep sound at idle and below 4,000rpm. They sound somewhat similar to stock mufflers at idle and below 4,000 rpm but are a little louder and a little deeper. Above 4,000 rpm they begin to scream and you can really hear that wonderful Yammaha music! I love the sound of them. My car is driven every day and very often (over 30,000 miles last year) so I have to live with the sound and I can tell you that they are not too loud but loud enough that people notice when the secondaries open! Cruising on the highway they are not very much louder than stock mufflers. I would recommend them hands down...especially for the price.

Again, you cant beat the cost here either. Summit Racing has really great customer service too. :thumb:

edit: do you have a part number for the 18" resonator?

Jason: I was so gonna tape the exhaust before and after with my video camera, but the sound was so irritating that I opted not to do so. After I heard the improvement today, I was kinda bummed I didnt, so thanks. When even my wife said: "It sounds more bassy and less buzzy", but still loud, I was happy.

Stainless SS y-pipe? nope, didnt have an MTX when that deal came around.

Where to get them now? Well, you could try SS, but good luck. Otherwise, watch ebay and the forum classifieds.

I was thinking about the cattless Y but I can't get an 18" resonator cause I plan on getting a rod shifter in the near future. ANy way to get around that?

I would measure from the bend at the rod shifter to the bend at the gas tank and get the BIGGEST glass pack/resonator I could find, that will fit there.
