Basically a bolt on job. Pull the cable system out and bolt the new rod shifter up. You do need to have the resonator pipe bent to clear the rod shifter box. Any ****. shop should be able to do that for you. Pretty simple install. Put the car up on jackstands and expect to spend 30min - 1hour under there. While your at it you should rebuild the rodshifter (shonut carries the bushing) and grease everything up with a wheelbearing grease. That helps smooth out the shifting even more. Again, its a strait forward and simple job.

You also have to cut out the hole in the floorpan for the shifter to go through. The original Ford instructions from the SVO shifter are reproduced on SHO Times.

You will also have to cut off half the heatshield under the floor, for the shifter to pass through. The rodshifter includes a new heatshield (or it should).
Here is the SHOtimes procedure: Rod shifter swap

That also has a parts list so you know all the parts needed. Time needed varies between a few hours to a full weekend - took me most of a weekend, but I wanted to avoid cutting the old cables, plus I was figuring out how to take the console off, getting needed tools, etc.
