So i changed my wheels a while back from non-factory back to the stock wheels and in doing the changeover in the dark i did not see that one of the centering rings from the aftermarket wheels got stuck on the hub. I drove it for a while and there must have been a wobble because when i went to put the stock wheels back on i noticed i had two broken studs. The remaining were fortunately in a triangle so the wheel was fastened enough not to fall off. Of course upon removing i found the crushed centering ring and it all became clear what happened.
Now the problem, replacing those studs appears to be a ridiculous design. I have done this on other vehicles and there has always been a spot on the hub that gives you enough space and allows you to pound the old stud out and enter a new stud from the rear. When i bought the replacement factory studs i noticed the otherwise round "head" of the stud had one corner cut flat. I thought perfect this must be done because it allows the stud to squeek by the hub for easy replacement... WRONG.... Upon getting in there, removing the caliper, disc, and spash shield there is not way that i see to fit a stud in from the rear, or remove a broken one. The only option i see is to drop the whole hub assembly. If thats the case i'll be bringing it to the dealer.
Has anyone else tackled this job? Am i missing something?
