Alright,
I might be buying this car to fix up but i really want to know what this problem is. He says it makes alot of smoke- like bellows of smoke(didnt ask him what color) but its probably bluish i would bet. And it also makes a knock thats real loud and hurts your ears.. He said it happened when he went to shift back to 3rd from 4th but missed it and hit 2nd- did he blow a rod bearing or just mess up the timing now.. but our engine is a non interference motor so if it is the timing than the motor can be saved- but if its the rod bearings its more involved..

but i also have a motor that can go into it no problem- so my question is- is this motor junked or possibly saved- and could i drive on it to save on a tow???

Back in Michigan ... again.
How do you "miss 3rd" and hit 2nd?? 2nd gear isn't even close to 3rd, there's no way you could accidently hit 2nd gear on a 4-3 downshift. Unless the guy meant to say a 3-4 upshift; you can accidently get 2nd gear then. Otherwise I'd say the guy with the car is full o bs

Sounds to me like the engine is done for. Bellows smoke and knocks loud will not be a timing issue, that motor has tossed a rod or something. If you have an engine to swap in fine, but I wouldn't plan on finding a simple fix for it.

If the car moves under it's own power and you don't want to save that engine I suppose you could drive it, but it may only go 10 feet and stop. Not to mention the fog of smoke you'd be pumping out; just bite the bullet & get it towed, you'd be better off in the long run.

Run. Run as fast as you can. That is not a fixer-upper. That is most likely a dead engine.

I'm gonna swap my engine in to this car- im probably gonna go get the car next week- and start the process of swapping while replacing many parts- like motor mounts- cps- timing belt- all that good stuff like that- and rod bearings.. so this car will be good as new when the swap is done- my engine is very strong right now.

Knock -> rod bearings
Smoke -> valve guides/seals and/or piston rings

The thing is are we just talking normal, smooth progressive wear or are we talking a serious engine damaging event. IE., a messed up crank can cost you more than a low-miles 3.2 from a junkyard in relatively decent shape.

ok now the question is...

My 91 Sho has 154 k miles on it running like a champ put that engine in the new SHO

OR

Find a low mile 3.2 engine and dump that in there or dont even mess with that.

All i want to do is get a gen 2 body running strong so i can save up for a mazda 6

Cheapest would be to swap your 91's engine in there. It might very well last long enough for you to save up enough $$$$ to buy the Mazda 6.

Ok still on this subject- i need to know something about this engine from you guys.. i want to use this engine as parts to convert my other ATX SHO into a MTX- now do you think this SHO's heads are shot and not usable at all.. and what does it take to ruin heads.

Also can someone explain why you need to use all the 3.0 front end stuff on a 3.2 to make it work.

Is there any benefit using the 3.0 heads on a 3.2 over using the 3.2 heads

The only benefit is slightly easier/quicker installation since if you use the 3.2 heads you need to cut off (a few minutes with a hacksaw) a piece of metal. Also the 3.0 intake cams are *slightly* more aggressive. The downside is having to spend money on a head gasket set and the clean and prep time involved with installing new head gaskets. That's a *lot* more time than a few minutes with a hacksaw.
