I am getting an almost constant code 6 or 66 from the air bag light on my 1990. It used to happen intermittently, but now it seems to happen almost every time I start the car.

From searching here, the code says that it is an open circuit in the driver's side air bag system, which appears to most always be related to some copper rings inside the steering wheel.

My question is...is it dangerous to just pull the bulb? Am I in any danger of the air bag exploding without cause? Or is there some other possible cause I can check?

I can do the work if I need to, and of course will follow all the safety procedures. I'm just a bit tired of working on it (just did complete 60K).

Thanks for any advice.

The clockspring in the steering wheel is the most likely cause of the 6 blinks on the Gen I SHO. Try this link from my experience that includes a procedure to replace the clockspring contacts.
