I was wondering if someone could assist me with my interior roof assist handles. My 1991 SHO did not come with them. So I got 3 of them from a wrecked 89 Mercury Sable. So I want to install them. But I have a problem. The holes are in the headliner cardboard. But I have a sunroof. The sable did not. So the head lining sits lower has about 0.5-1.0" inch gap between the headliner and the sheet metal where they screw in. Does anyone know what Ford used as a spacer? I have the spring loaded handles.

The handles only cam on non-sun roof cars,so something must be different there.I just had my headliner off,and can not think of anywhere even remotely strong enought to hold them. The non sunroof cars must have a different set up to use them somehow.

I added assist handles in my 89 with sunroof. The holes for all 3 handles are still there, the rear ones should go in no problem (I recommend taking the headliner down partially to see exactly where the holes are). In the front, the roof is lower due to the sunroof, so you need to find longer screws. Make sure they're not too long though!
