Attempting a SHO swap into an e30

I appreciate the encouragement everyone, however unfortunately it looks like this swap will be put on hold for now- or at least start moving REALLY slowly. I have a really heavy course load this fall, and as I had mentioned awhile back in this thread I'm on the Baja team at my university, and...

Attempting a SHO swap into an e30

Wow. I appreciate your suggestions, but I would like to point out a couple things: The starter mounting is not an issue, I simply mounted it to my adapter plate in the original SHO position, and notched the bellhousing a little bit- it did not interfere with the clutch fork at all. I...

Attempting a SHO swap into an e30

Are you referring to the 3.4 v8 when you say it succeeded the SHO? Or a newer engine still? I would love to play around with a new twin turbo ecoboost engine, but its not in my budget. Ford offers stand alone engine management which would make it a relatively easy swap. I'm curious, do you...

Attempting a SHO swap into an e30

Yea the t56 is definitely a great trans, it just wasn't in my budget. I'm not familiar with the 3.5 Duratec, what did that come out of?

Attempting a SHO swap into an e30

That's a sweet deal, not a bad way to get an awesome engine and trans. I am by no means an expert on any of this, but a couple comments I have from what I've learned this summer: The t56 isnt really that much heavier than most 6 speed trans, if at all. It also is way more trans than a N/A SHO...

Attempting a SHO swap into an e30

What's your reason for the t56 out of interest? Have you adapted it yet? But that's an awesome build! I've always loved bugeyes. Are you concerned about the weight of the SHO in the bigeye?

Attempting a SHO swap into an e30

Thanks, I have the transmission bolted onto the engine and have a clutch package figured out. Unfortunately this week I'm losing my space I had at my school, so I am trying to figure out somewhere I can put everything and continue the project. What are you working on?

    Need help with FrankenSHO wiring

Hello, I am working towards swapping a v6 SHO engine into a e30. I have mated a honda s2000 6 speed transmission behind the engine, but have not put them in the car yet. Unfortunately I'm loosing my work space soon, so I need to get rid of the donor SHO. I found Off Road SHO's thread on...

Attempting a SHO swap into an e30

Quick update here: tomorrow morning I'm waterjetting the basic shape of the adapter plate out of 1/2" aluminum, and then it will be on to the mill to get dimensionally accurate holes. I waterjetted a plate of thin aluminum that slipped over the dowel pegs and had a hole in the middle, which...

Attempting a SHO swap into an e30

Does anybody have an MTX lying around that they could take a measurement for me? I already sold mine and forgot to measure the radial distance from the center of the input shaft to the starter mounting bolts. :bonk: I could try to figure out myself where they should be by holding the starter up...

Attempting a SHO swap into an e30

I'm not really sure how many people are following this thread, and if this thread is in the right category on this forum. Should I be starting a new thread somewhere on this forum for this project? I have some prototype adapter plates for the s2000 6 speed transmission being waterjetted out of...

Attempting a SHO swap into an e30

I plan on using an upgraded s2000 clutch if I go that route which I'm not super happy with, as from my experience upgraded clutch's aren't as nice to drive. As far as the transmission goes, I understand that it depends how you drive the car, if you launch, if you run sticky tires, etc. but from...

Attempting a SHO swap into an e30

Hello all, despite the fact that I am working on this as a full time job, at the end of the day I don't have a shop and I've never done anything like this before- so progress is very slow. The s2000 6 speed manual transmission looks the most promising out of the 3 transmissions I have, but I...

Attempting a SHO swap into an e30

I only got to hear it pop a couple times, the gentleman I bought it from had cut the fuel tank out so we just squirted some gas in the intake and got it to run. He is a reputable person though, so I have faith in him when he says it ran fine and he drove it around. The fact that I had to have...

Attempting a SHO swap into an e30

Well I picked up a '94 MTX last night for $300, the dash says 235k miles but the engine block has been painted along with a few other things in the engine bay, so I'm not sure if it is actually a 235K mile engine or not, but either way $300 is ok with me for a prototyping engine. I also have...

Attempting a SHO swap into an e30

I've been absent the last couple days because I've been in upstate New York presenting and racing the tube frame baja car I had mentioned earlier that I was involved in building. This was the first year in a long time my school has built a car, and we were operating on a 1/10th of the budget of...

Attempting a SHO swap into an e30

What is the difference between the 3.0 heads and oil pan vs the 3.2? I've considered in the back of my mind modifying the oil pan in some way, I am going to cross that bridge when I get there. For starters I'm going to work on developing a way to put a 6 speed transmission behind the engine.

Attempting a SHO swap into an e30

Hey guys, a couple more questions I have come up with: Does anybody know if the flywheel from a 3.0L will bolt onto a 3.2L? Are these cars neutrally balanced components? and what do the SHO engines have for an engine balancer? Harry

Attempting a SHO swap into an e30

I wondered this, as I did a brief 5 minute google search while I was at the guys house looking at the car. The only thing that made me question this was I believe the power locks cycled when it was put in gear/park. Were these different switches or are they linked in some way? Thanks, Harry
