    Valve to piston clearance?

It was designed as a non-interference engine, but I have found on two occasions that carbon buildup on the pistons makes the SHO engine an interference configuration. I have even bent an intake valve on an engine I worked on by turning the damper by hand with the timing belt off. My engine, with...

I just cross threaded a valve cover bolt, now what?

Heli-Coil or similar thread insert. Search on the thread size and pitch. I'm quite sure I posted it long ago

Where to get valve shims? besides sho source

My Yamaha shop charged $20 for a pack of 5. They would not sell them individually. I have 200 shims from 2.300 to 2.750 mm along with the tools and the gapping worksheets. Maybe I should share my toys.

    3.0-3.2 IMRC the same?

You should also check for a vacuum leak as the runner actuators are held closed by manifold vacuum. An early secondary runner opening as you are experiencing may be due to a low manifold vacuum level that reaches the tipping point for the diaphram actuators as you open the throttle plate. The...

    gatorback belts

The 6-rib Gatorback failed very young on my SHO. Separated on the longitudinal grooves. Not the best design.

Finally swapped rod bearings (at 208k miles)

I believe that oil matters a great deal. 1991 SHO, 21 years, 416,750 miles, changed OEM rod bearings at 258,000 miles, have used only Castrol GTX (High Mileage for a while) 10W-30 at 3,000 mile intervals. No sludge and the cam lobes still looked great during the last gapping service at 405,000...

    Timing belt covers

As stated before, the covers protect the belt, bearings and seals from wear and exposure to moisture and grit, but they also protect fingers and loose clothing from getting mangled. Some may think it "cool" to see the spinning hardware. The idea of leaving the covers off for this purpose would...

    Valve Adjustment

I have a step-by-step procedure that I wrote and refined during the many valve gap services I have performed (20-ish, 6 on my own car). I would be happy to email it to you if you provide an email address.

    New or Used CV joints

Evan the A1 Cardone remans can last longer than new ones. Sometimes. I have installed "several" warranty replacements for the cost of only 45 minutes of my effort. Still rolling after 411,000 miles.

    Stripped valve cover bolt

It is important to clean out the Allen hole of debris and ensure the hex bit is fully seated before applying torque. Just don't strip the threads.

    Mileage at 1st Clutch Job

It also depends on how well it was installed. I paid good money for a shop to install one that lasted 70K miles. The quill, TOB and pressure plate gave out. After seeing how it failed, the new clutch I installed has been in for 150K and is still smooth. One important lesson: keep the clutch...

    Trailer hitch???

Class II is a 3,500 pound rated hitch. I have had one in use for a while.

vibration and noise when turning and leting clutch out

Does it make the standard "clacking" of a worn CV joint when you apply any gas in a tight turn? That would be a CV joint. If so, just get a remanufactured CV halfshaft for about $60 with a lifetime warranty. Much easier and cleaner to replace than a CV jont boot.

    how longs it got

I always thought the hole in the rubber near the center of the "V" in the mount was for a moisture drain. Mine has had that since its early days.

    car running cold!

The OEM thermostat in my 1991 was marked with "82C" on the flange. I made a note in the maintenance log to document it. That equates to 179.6F. I have always used the 82C/180F versions that are also available with non-Motorcraft repalcements. As far as the ATX, I have found only the 88C/190.4F...

    Shifter spins?

I don't know how many of the OEM parts are retained in the short shifter, but my rod shifter had the same problem. See my topic here.
