Replacing Front Strut Mounts & Bearings

I leave the LCA attached to the knuckle, but remove the sway bar link, tie rod end and brake caliper (hang from a hook, not the hose). I use a 1.5-ton bottle jack between the knuckle perch and the bottom of the spring perch to slide the knuckle off the strut. Ensure the jack is adjacent to the...

    Front Rotors

The holes were not for cooling, but for escape of gases generated by the pads. Modern pads do not really have this concern, so the holes are more for weight savings and appearance, but not in that order. The drilled holes actually reduce the friction and heat sink surface area of the rotor...

    main seal questions....

The power steering cooler is necessary for pump longevity and not large enough if you track the car. I had steering assist failures while on the track and failed a power steering pump. Replacing the small original with a larger unit lowered PS fluid temperatures from 180F to 120F in the...

    Coil-Pack life expectancy ?

I'll chime in for a reference point that they can last at least 424,750 miles. All engine and ignition parts are as original as possible on my seasoned engine.

Gen I Air Bag Clockspring Source

Might you know what the supplier name and part number would be for a Gen I compatible unit? I have searched through outfits like Dorman, but have not found a unit targeted specifically towards the Gen I Tauruses. I know that the last part I bought from Ford in 2005 time frame (see topic here)...

Gen I Air Bag Clockspring Source

I need to replace the air bag clockspring in my 1991, but have found that Ford has discontinued the part. Has anyone been able to find, fit or cross reference a clockspring that will work in the Gen I SHOs? The parts catalogs show the part for only the Gen III Taurus and it appears not to have...

    Tach buzzing/scraping noise

That would be the cable. The simple checks are for a tight bend in the cable between the speedo in the dash and the transmission post. Make sure the cable has the smoothest path possible. It way be worn beyond the point where re-lubing it can help, but graphited speedo oil can stop many noises.

    plannin on a trip

After the suspension work, you must have the alignment checked. The greatest failure probability on a long trip, with steady highway speeds, is with the tires. As you stated before, check the air pressure, but also examine them for punctures from nails or other metallic objects. You might be...

    random hard starts

When it cranks without firing, try turning the key to ON without turning all the way to START. Listen for the fuel pump for its 1.5 second prime. If no pump whine, then the fuel pump is likely faulty. Check also for ťhe CID sensor code. It could be a failing cam sensor.

    Cooling on the track

Like Wildstar said before, if the cooling system's major components are working properly, you should not be able to overheat a V6 MTX SHO. I have run mine at the track for 20-minute sessions on days as hot as 100F without the needle moving past the midpoint of the gauge. The heatsoak after...

    Front Main

You can pick up a damper puller as a loaner from AutoZone or O'Reilly's or your local auto parts store or invest in your own for about $10.

    broke a cam

The fracture is external to the bearing and should not have affected it. A cam swap would be a simpler possibility.

    Power Steering Fluid - Type F ?

I actually read the manual and use Type F also. Just changed the fluid last weekend for a refresh. I have used Mobil1 synthetic and MERCON over the miles, but the shifting feel and coloration of the drained fluid has caused me to return to the Type F. When I replaced the blocking rings and seals...

    broke a cam

The break appears to be brittle fracture and the location at the sprocket side of the #1 bearing leads to the supposition that the belt loading was a contributor in the failure. There does not apperar to be any rotational or twisting shear as would indicate the cams could not be turned and the...

    broke a cam

Excess tension on the timning belt can place a shearing load on the intake camshafts. That tension would have to be very significant to fatigue the cast iron of the camshaft, but anything is possible. It could also be that there was a casting flaw in the samshaft itself. A closer inspection of...
