How to Achieve 40+MPG highway

recently this past weekend I drove from Canada Capital to USA's Capital and back
but with way better gas mileage than last year

we realized we were well ahead of my estimated gas stops


Switch your oil to full synthetic
i'm running Royal Purple 5w20
inflate tires while they are warm to 40psi (this may cause faster wear on the center tread of your tires)
run 93-94 Octane... BP 93 or Sunoco 93 and only those 2 fuels (BP's changed to Gulf are acceptable or Canadian Petro 94)
wear really thin shoes my gf got 44mpg wearing pretty much ballet shoes
go easy on the gas feather it and keep an average speed of 70-80mph (you can attempt a slight pulse and glide at that speed)


when you fill up from almost empty you should have a nice distance to empty picture like this



don't expect the fuel gauge to move slightly for hours

i'm not sure if the K&N drop in air filter helped but i have one

If I wanted to "feather" my gas pedal, I would've opted to purchase something else much less enticing......

You know, a car that doesn't have twin turbo's, AWD, and nearly 400 ponies beckoning your foot to smash that pedal to the floor and thoroughly enjoy each and every resulting lurch backwards into the comfortably bolstered seat(s) as you hurdle down a nice stretch of pavement, giggling like a lil school kid eyes wide with wonderment and amazement.

oh don't worry... I don't drive slow and boring in the city however in maryland, they don't seem to understand the concept of the left lane as a passing lane...

In the summer I drive barefoot most of the time...doesn't get much thinner than that. I do notice I am easier on the pedal than when I'm wearing shoes.

I understand what you're saying -- I too went on a longish trip this summer -- to North Bay -- well not that long (some 600miles) , but long enough I could get a good idea of max mileage possible in this car (at the speed limit).
The result was pretty damned good IMHO: a tad over 36 mpg Imperial -- that's a tad over 30 mpg's for you guys with the smaller gallon in the US.

As has been said tho -- once you **** after mpg's you do miss out on some fun. Pointless with such a fun ride.

At least on a long trip at busy highway speed there's little time for fun anyway so attaining decent mileage was refreshing.
It does show what this engine is capable of which such good performance capabilities.

We do drive a gem that's we can all agree on.

Did you also just had a battery disconnect? My SHO will show 500+KMS tops when completely filled. Never has shown 700+ unless you did a battery disconnect and had it relearn stats.

If you fill up while on a trip getting good mileage the computer will compute for the present good mileage for the remainder of the gas in the tank.
Thus you'll see quite long distance to empty and will attain that distance if you don't change driving habits, style, speed etc. Once you get in town, stop and go, slower driving and up and down the gears you'll see that long distance go down dramatically.

But do the math if you're skeptical: 722km = 448.63 miles.

According to my SHO brochure, the gas tank on 4WD Tauruses has a capacity of 19 gallons.

448.63 miles divided by 19 gallons = 23.61mpg.

Not sure about Unknown_Driver's #'s or whether he confirmed by hard numbers or not but I did on my 36+mpg's on my recent trip.

For best accuracy I've found the old (long) way of dividing miles/kilometers by gallons/liters to be most accurate.-- tho filling up and topping off these new capless gas fillers can be difficult.

As an aside, I probably could have gotten slightly better by not speeding at all or going slightly below the limit -- tho off course this is not practical or even safe to do so.

Closest I've ever gotten is 29.8 MPG interstate only on a 5 hour trip.
But, I cannot help but push the pedal enough to feel the force.

I tried this morning (converted to english system, not metric) and on the highway, cruising at 75mph on flat highway, by myself and with a third of the tank, I could only get around 28mpg. Now, if I cruise in same conditions at 45-50 mph, I can get about 35mpg at best. So, I don't think Unknown's number can be repeated and probably it is a misindication from its computer.
As for the 36mpg+ of Shogun, I guess maybe the asphalt is better, the wind was in the back, no A/C and your wife weights -500lbs lol!
Not saying you are lying any of you two, but I don't see how a 400hp SHO weighting 4,500lbs or more with people inside can average about the same as a 4 cyl. Civic weighting less than 3000 lbs with a reputation of being economic on gas...
And Markathome, with nearly 29.8 mpg, that is the most I would believe one can get with our SHO and that is being very very gentle on the throttle... no stopping, only highway...

Keep in mind to, I think there are variations in octane in the fuel purchases. Some fuel stations I think have as much as 10% ethanol where as some have 0. So, if your getting "richer fuel" (better octane) I think this will also enter into the calculation for improved mileage calculations. I'm still with Steve... from personal experience.

And I run octane 94! But maybe my custom exhaust is eating fuel???

As I said -- the old long way of calculating is the most accurate -- and no I don't lie and neither do my numbers........36+ mpg's is absolutely legit. (no tail wind or anything else to help me along)

Yes who would have thought such a car would get such numbers?
But it can!

and oh yeah -- any civic I've had would get closer to 50 mpg's using the same calculation procedures so mid 30's on my SHO isn't really out of the realm of conceivability is it.

You guys kept you foot out of it long enough you'd see it too I'm sure.

one more thing: see Markathome's post above -- He can get the same mileage (approx) as I can.
