Would Needing a Valve Adjustment Cause Bad Idle?

Ok, the last time I drove the SHO my bro and I had done the wires and plugs. I remember when the secondaries opened there wasn't quite the punch it used to have. Kinda slow really. The car is about 130K miles overdue for an adjustment, so I'm hoping that's the problem. What else should I look at??

:thankyou:

I'm gonna say no, that wouldnt' cause bad idling being slightly out...

Is your gas still all old?

I agree, unlikely that the idle would be affected by valve clearance, unless its off a mile in which case it wouldn't run decent at any speed.

Other likely candidates include mafs, tps, o2 sensors, dis, coil pack, etc.

Does it have any codes? I struggled w/ a similar issue on the green 95 I had, wouldn't run quite right, bogged down under hard acceleration but no codes. Eventually the tps got bad enough that it set a code, changing that made it way better.

no. as stated.

Having poolry sealing valves could cause a bad idle...but the cam is there to OPEN them...not seal them.

IF valve adjustment is 130k overdue, that means the car has 190k on it, at least. IF valves lash has not been done in that many miles, it is probable that other required maintenance items have not been done as well. Fuel filter could be old and clogged, intake all carboned up, oil in plug wells, etc... The list is long for all the required maintenance, so first go through the checklist, as plugs and wires alone is not enough. If the idle was good and it had better pickup before changing plugs and wires, then likely something to do with that work; i.e., maybe there is a vacuum leak on the intake somewhere from when it was removed, etc...

I bought the car with 93K miles on it. The owner said the car was maintained.

Since I have had the car I kept up with sensors, valve cover gaskets, plugs, wires, pretty much everything BUT the valve adjustments. The car had a power issue before we did the plugs and wires. Since then, it's been sitting due to the water pump.

The only sensors that haven't been recently replaced are the TPS, crank, and MAF. The ignition coil was even recently done. I've double checked the wires and they are on correctly. It might very well be the fuel pump. That thing's been whining for a while.

A bad fuel pump 'should' set a code.

If the wp has been leaking on the cps, it could easily be sick, which could result in the performance issues you describe.

Look for cats or exhaust system clogged, intake plenum full of carbonized crud. Valve adjustment due, but it's not your problem. Run KOER and KOEO tests.

Thanks for all the help. There are no CATs on the car to get clogged:evilgrin: and the intake plenum has been cleaned several times.

I know for a fact the WP has been leaking all over the CPS.
