at higher speeds (highway driving), the drivers side wiper flys right off the windshield. it also doesn't go onto the high speed setting. would this be a motor problem? if it is, how much would a replacement motor cost?

Yeah I know what you mean. In a way it's good. My wipers work up to 70mph, then it lifts and stops wiping so it keeps my speed down. As far as I know there's not much you can do about it. I've tried several different types of wiper blades, some advertised not to lift, but they all do.

Check you C-clamp under the black covering under your wipers it may have fallen off. Mine fell off and at 110mph the wipres would slide up.

It goes without saying that driving above 70 mph in conditions that require the use of the wipers in not very wise. I have installed a set of ANCO Aerovantage blades that have made a significant difference in the ability of the blades to remain in contact with the window at highway speeds. Another suggestion is to treat you windshield with Rain-X so that you don't even need to use the wipers at highway speeds.

The lack of high wiper speed is likely due to a dirty contact in the stalk switch. If you can manipulate the stalk switch to get the wipers to behave differently, then either the multifunction switch needs to be replaced or the switch needs to be cleaned.

Here is a repost of a previous responses I have made to a similar problem. Search keys: multifunction switch clean

You can disassemble and clean the head of the wiper stalk or you can spend the big $$$ (about $70 with tax) and replace the whole multifunction switch.
To remove the head, use a small, flat tipped screwdriver and gently pry the cap off the tip of the stalk. Now remove the Phillips head screw. You can then pull out the rotating assembly, but you must be very careful to capture the spring with brass caps on both ends that passes diametrically through the head. Those caps are electrical contacts and are essential to a properly working wiper switch.

With the barrel removed, you can use a Q-tip soaked with electrical contact cleaner to clean the contacts of the grease. When the old grease is cleaned out, you can then apply new dielectric grease to the contacts and reinstall the springs and caps into the rotating head and the head assembly into the barrel. You will have to use your fingers to compress the spring to allow installation of the barrel into the stalk. It should be as good as new.

I remember several years ago having some wipers that had a shape molded into them like some sort of spoiler. You might check for something like that at a parts store and see if they help if nothin' else. If I remember right, though, the wipers were meant more for looks than anything.

I would say try to find something wrong, though, because when there's nothing wrong, the wipers don't seem to do that... Otherwise, we'd all be complaining about it... :)
