Well got a call last week from the machine shop. Not a good call.... but a hey I've been thinking call...

Background, he has built big power engines in the V8 world since I was a kid and my dad was having engines built...

This call was the Rod and Pistons are pry heavier than the stock units, can you bring by a stock one for me to weight.

The call today was yeah those new units weight more, you will need to have the assembly balanced and I'm not setup to do a V6 crank/assembly... here is a # to a guy that may be able to help.... come get your stuff....

I said please deck the block for me and call me when that is done...

I will call the other shop tomorrow to see if they can help....

My Question to others that have "Built" a block with aftermarket parts... did you ever have your rotating assembly balanced? or did it just get put together?

Raptor crank, manley rods and pistons, king bearings is my setup... I really have not heard anybody talk about this step in the pages I've read...

I fully understand that this old school guy may be a bit scared to jump in... but an engine is an engine after all...

any thoughts ? @802SHO @Jordan_R @bpd1151 @Ecoboost_xsport @FiveLeeter918
Jordan built his first engine and he had to bring it to a place to get it balanced. I’ve had a similar experience with a shop not wanting to build mine, originally I attempted to do it locally and I called Island Racing. They build high hp V8 engines and I knew about them doing a Honda 4 cylinder, so I was pretty shocked when they told me they “dont do engines that small” when I called. Made it sound like I was asking about a lawn mower.

I’m sure your guy can do it and “not setup” for V6 sounds like a little time he’d have to put in to “set it up”. Not sure but that sucks.

Max Power Automotive did all the work, balanced everything. It was only about $250 to ship him my engine from VT to IL. Best I can do is offer the same services I got. You can give the owner Matt Pohnan a call if you want. 630-699-5631

......I drew up a dry sump system that should work with some custom work. And working on an oilpan design now.
Wont be going into my sho. I will just build it and sell it for someones project car...
Very late reply to this, but regarding the dry sump: if you can get in touch with Ginetta Cars in the UK, they build a Typhoon powered GT4 car. I had one of their dry sump systems I was planning to put onto a RWD 3.5 EB, but decided it was not worth it. Bolts right up. They run it on a 400+ hp 4.0L stroked Typhoon V6 (the 3.5/3.7L NA engine) using the OEM pump for pressure and a 2 or 3 stage scavenge. I wish I still had pictures, but it was about 8 years ago I had it.

Absolutely had to have everything balanced together. It wasn't a big deal for my machine shop I used. What I am hearing here is he doesn't want to do it. Your set up is basically identical to my first SHO built engine. It was no problem for the machine shop I used. Guy just doesn't want to mess with it unfortunately. I have a guy here that can do it but obviously that would require a whole lot of time and expense getting it to me so finding someone local probably your best bet. Need someone who is going to take time to measure the weight of the rods, pistons and then balance the crank to that which would require either drilling or plugging the current crank. The shop that balanced mine balanced it with the flex plate and the crank pulley on it.

I had that feeling the whole time, each time I dropped off parts, I could tell - is this the moment he's going to bow out...
Thanks for the tip of the flex plate and crank pulley, I will bring those guys too

Time will tell...

Sorry a few days late to this post, have been terribly busy at work (crime is relentless in the Chicagoland area after all) but alas I digress.....

I see that Andrew already posted the info for my current builder (Max Power Automotive) and that was going to be my suggestion as well.

Hope all works out!

UPDATE...

Dropped off the crank, pistons, rods, bearings and rings to the new shop....
Shop guy kept asking what the bob weight was and I have zero clue on what to tell him...
I just assume he would assemble one and weight it against the old piston and rod I brought him.
Mission now is to bring him the old crank and a few more pistons and he is going to figure out the different in the two.. and then apply that to his next moves.
next drop off will be an old crank and piston/rod setup and also the newly machined pulley and flex plate and hardware.... time will tell...

If anyone knows their "bob weight" from their machine shop time - please chime in... lets see if there is a trend in this to help others out....

Novice advice... are you re-using the stock crankshaft? I saw you are using new Manley rods, I assume piston heads too. A new crankshaft would have its bobweight in the specs.

I grabbed a new raptor crank from Ford, the old is just for reference on what ford thought was okay for balancing... machine shop needs a base line

Well the winter project is heading back into winter again.....

The new shop completed the crank, after balancing the old crank to understand Ford, He had to add weight to the new crank, polished it up, weight matched all the rods, and matched the wrist pins to the pistons to create a matching weight combo for all of it.... Guy really invested some time to make sure it was spot on!!
But he doesn't have the time to build the bottom end for me...

The block was left at the old shop, so I stopped by with everything and to my surprise the deck surface was cleaned up and ready for assembly.

Again told him to take his time...

As for the car.... it's not going in this Flex... sadly Michigan is not nice to cars and this car is rusting out... end of an era for it. I been looking for a new chassis - something with a blown engine (they're out there lol) but also eyeballing a Explorer ST - might just be building an engine to build an engine.. time will tell.
