Why is my steering wheel squealing?

You're hearing a squealing noise from where exactly?

I doubt the actual steering wheel itself.

More likely from the engine bay. My guess would be, w/o any further info having been provided, the culprit could be the power steering pump.

I also have a squeaking noise whenever the steering wheel is being turned. Same noise in both the ‘13 Flex and the ‘13 MKS. Just recently I was replacing the lower front control arms and discovered that the noise is much louder than inside the vehicle. So I believe the root cause is near the bottom of the column in the engine bay. Sounds like plastic on plastic (or aged hardened rubber) to me so I will use a silicone based **** to avoid destroying materials. A petroleum based **** could break down many plastics. Ran out of time during the last repair so this goes on the list for next time.

Had a high pitch squeaky noise when turning. As Dpangbur mentioned, I found root cause of the plastic collar/dust cover to be the culprit. Had downpipes off during maintenance and took closer look at steering rack. Spayed it with white lithium grease, also did u-joints too. Have had no noise since.

The SIR coil fits just behind the steering wheel and carries what I'll call a coiled up tape wire that connects the airbag and other steering wheel electrical inputs to a stationary connector on the column. It's how you can turn your steering wheel and make connections electrically to the rest of the car. Anyhow, it's a plastic housing that has 2 halves that sit inside each other and no lubrication. It's slightly common for the plastic on plastic contact of the part a squeak or have an abrasive feel.
The other common point is the rubber boot at the bottom. The boot where the intermediate shaft passes through can be lubed, SIR coil should be replaced imho if found to be bad. You should be able to put your ear in the general area and turn, or have someone turn , the wheel and hear it if it's either of those.

Thanks much! So the SIR takes the place of the clock spring? Or it's just a different name?
