Why do I accelerate faster in OD than in D??

I raced a Cobra (See my post "Just took on a Cobra" in the open forum, non-sho related)(Well, nevermind, I posted it, but it apparently didn't register, and it was too long and I don't feel like typing it up again, sorry). I put it in drive, thinking that I would get better acceleration. When we took off, the car acelerated slower than it normally does in OD when I floor it. Normally in OD I get tons of wheel spin when I floor it, butI barely got any when I floored it in D. Also when I rev it and it gets up to around 3500-4000 revs, the car kinda shudders. Is this normal? shrug
If you really want the story about why I actaully raced a Cobra, just let me know in a reply and I will type it here.

Rev limiter. Keeps you from toasting your engine. supposed to be there and do that. thumbs_u

Not to sound like a moderator but I have an Idea why your post didn't "register." wink Anything that deals with illegal street racing gets deleted. This is taken from the SHOFORUM Rules;

Street racing is illegal and dangerous and has no place here. Any posts dealing with illegal activity or street racing will be deleted without notice. There are ¼ mile and 1/8 mile tracks throughout the country. Posts about a legal race at a track are okay. But be prepared to be asked for time slips as proof of the “****”.

I wouldn't really say that was "Streetracing"...it was more this guy just showing me how much faster his car is than mine! thumbs_u

That was a Blown 5liter 94 Cobra, let's say it was a display of acceleration.

and the Cobra displayed it MUCH better than we did. Smokin tires and not goin anywhere with no brake burn, hella sweet.

Best thing? He gave props to the SHO. I was totally impressed with the Cob. though.

So there is a Rev Limiter, but wouldn't the rev limiter come into play in OD as well? why would OD disengage the Rev Limiter? there were definately some smoking proxes coming from the front of the SHO in OD, but just a shutter in D when we were trying to get the jump on a red light.

The rev limiter that SHOWHAT9 is talking about is the fact that when an ATX SHO is in park or neutral it won't rev above 4000rpm or so.
Gen 3 SHOs are one of the worst cars to try to do a burnout in. It's possible that it was sandy or something where you did the burnout, and that the tires hooked up better when you couldn't do one.
I doubt if it has anything with you driving in O/D or in D, because all that affects is if the car stays in 3rd gear as it's highest gear or if it shifts into 4th gear.
How are you shifting in and out of O/D? I thought that 99s didn't have an O/D off button? shrug

When I was in the market for a Gen III, I drove a 99 without the o/d button and when it was put into the "D" selection, it would start in 1st, and shift all the way up to 3rd and would not go into 4th. There should be no difference in power on the bottom end whether starting in OD or D.

There is no actual button on the handle of the shifter on the 99. But there is an OD selection.

If you start out in D or 1, there is supposed to be more torque, otherwise, what is the point of having them there?...besides keeping it out of fourth and enigine braking.

On the gen II ATX's the shifter looks like this:

P RND21. The O/D button is on the shifter. Is it possible that the 99's came with the regular SLO ATX unit? I know Ford really cut back on options for that model year. shrug

There is no more torque in either selection. If you put it in 1, it will hold it in 1st gear and allow you to get a few hundred rpms more than you would if you let the car shift itself. The "D" on your shifter is the same as ours when we turn the OD off with the OD button. What is it there for...you said it...keeping it out of fourth gear and engine breaking.

I have a 99' and I'll be damned if there isn't a button on the shifter handle that toggles the overdrive function. We must have different setups, because my config is P R N D 2 1

Wess, this is taken from v8sho.com on the decontenting of the 99's.
" There is a TSB outlining the changes for 99. It says that all 99 SHO's use regular struts and that the O/D cancel button was a mid-year delete."
http://www.v8sho.com/SHO/TSB%20on%2099%20De-content.htm

It appears that you must have an early 99 SHO while 99V8SHO has a later production 99. It's all good! thumbs_u
I figured something like that was the case. I wonder if the later transmissions have any improvements. shrug

I find that there's no point to manually shiftin 1-2. When cool, it will shift 1-2 at about 6800 rpm. If you manually shift it you have to do it early because it doesn't shift exactly when you do. You may find yourself bouncing off the rev limiter. Also when shifting manually it seems to shift less hard.

I've found that there can be something to be gained shifting manually 2-3 when the exhaust is uncorked. Usually it shifts at around 6200 rpm 2-3 in drive. Manual shift it at 6800 rpm but remember you'll have to start in D and drop to 2 after the 1-2 shift. Don't forget to shift into 3rd as that can be embarrassing.
