Hi all.

Just bought a '93 MTX and have been giving it the once-over to see what has to be done, but I can't find what's supposed to be an X2J (or any other computer, for that matter).

Further, I couldn't find a pic of a dropped glove box (who keeps gloves in there anyway?) and what should be behind it anywhere. Does anyone have a pic or could someone snap one for me please?

Thanks in advance.

Oh yeah...an afterthought...my engine runs cold. And I mean cold. I could understand the air cooling effects of highway driving, but I was *ahem* "playing" around town last night and the temp gauge never registered higher than 1/8 of the way above the cold mark. My guess is thermostat and that's an easy fix, but, as this is the Temple of the SHO, I figure I might as well ask; is this one of their quirks?

(I already found info about the stock therm spring failing wide open and am betting this is the problem; Either that, or it has cooling issues and the seller took it out. I'm hoping it's the former and I get to keep as much of my limited faith in humanity as possible.)

Gratzie and please excuse the verbosity. (Quick plug for m-w.com. Love 'em!)

Afterthought #2:
Thank you all very much for the information and wealth of knowledge supplied. This is an impressive cyberstop obviously made so by the collection of individuals so ready, willing, and able to assist. Props to you all!

This already too-long post is really finished now...

I'm done...

really...

swear. Thanks again.

To see what computer you have you can drop the glove box by emptying it out and then pull the sides in so that the little posts clear then it will just drop down. Look in at the firewall up high at you will see it there. An easy way on my car at least is to open up the door and there is a sticker on the passenger side door jamb that says X2J. But yours could have been changed so the 1st way is the for sure way to check.
Also sounds like you need a new thermostat to get to operating temp. Your car will be running in open loop running that cold and will be waisting fuel.

The temp guage on your dash (why is it called a dash??) is getting its' information from a resistance-to-ground sending unit that is just rearward of the thermostat housing. They wear out over time. Do yourself a favor and determine what the actual temperature is before you start replacing things.

I use an infrared thermometer because it's very quick and easy to point at hard to reach areas. You can also use a "candy" thermometer, the kind that has a long poited spike with a dial gauge on the end, but you have to "putty" the pointy end onto the housing with playdough to keep the tip out of the much cooler airstream from the radiator.

Good luck.

Okay...found it; but what is it?

Okay...I think I'm in the right direction but still have a dilemma. There's a silver box about 6" long and 1 1/2" or so tall with a hole in the front and a connector board sticking out. This is the EEC, right? What attaches to those tabs; the fabled LPM I've read so much about?

Unfortunately, the sticker has been removed from the front and I'm not seeing it anywhere. Futher, no sticker on the passenger side jamb; it would have been removed for the paint job, but they didn't put it back.

I went through a couple of threads regarding computer removal & am comfy with it. But first - when I get the thing out, will it be obvious what type it is without the sticker (big X2J stamped on the front)? Any other means of identification without removal?

Thank you both for the replies; especially the advice about researching before ripping, Tom. I have a bad habit of impetuous bit-chomping and really just needed to slow down.

Love the SHO...check - Still in the honeymoon phase.
Learn the SHO...not-so-check - But I'm definitely in the right place.
