What was wrong with the clutch

Ok, for any of you who checked out my post a while ago about my sho not going into gear, I've found the problem. One of the previous owners had a clutch slipping, so they put some washers on the clutch cable. That way, the clutch was always engaged a little harder, also causing shifting problems eventually. I took these off, was able to shift it, but I still need a new clutch for the slipping problem. wink

How can shimming the clutch cable help with a slipping clutch? I expected that would be purely a function of the pressure plate clamping force and the remaining friction material on the disk.

Interesting idea, though. My '95 is nearing the end of its factory clutch, as shifting is becoming difficult. I've considered shimming the cable at the tranny lever to get a bit more release bearing movement. I assume this would hasten the bearing's failure, but has anyone else tried this? Would it work?

It sounds like he didn't know about the built in clutch cable take up in the clutch pedal mechanism. Lift the clutch pedal to automatically take up the slack in the cable.
