what to do first?

Hey guys, I just picked up a '97 in black two weeks ago and I think I've got the bug. So my question is what's the first mod I should do? I'm thinking the K&N filter and the underdrive pulley sound promising followed by some kind of exhaust work. I probably won't do anything till the summer anyway.

Well, the order of mods I went with was #1 K&N panel filter, #2 Rhino brand mufflers. #3 will be removing the intake restrictor and making the "Porter" type intake that's described at http://www.v8sho.com. #4 will be mounting the 17" wheels that I had installed on my 93 SHO.

Replacing the air filter is the easiest of any mod to do. You can order the filter from several sources, usually they sell anywhere from $40-50.

I'd definitely recommended looking at the above website for information. Tons of information about maintaining/modifying our SHOs.

I bought mine last October and really got the bug to enhance it after reading about all the things one can do. I put on the K&N panel filter and put on the performance exhaust. That really adds to the enjoyment.Probably adds 10 or 12 HP too.The UDP I will probably add soon.

I think Wuzzer has the right idea. My only quibble would be the mufflers, since it seems most exhaust work really only adds sound, not much in the way of HP, and often hurts torque. I would substitute the best set of tires you can afford.

Thanks. I've already checked out that site and a few others. I want to keep the stock appearance and sound (well somewhat) since I want to be low key. Its so much fun to smoke a rice racer since they're not expecting to lose.

The car has got brand new Cooper's on it so I'll wait till I wear those out before I think about upgrading wheels and tires. I'm looking for more power right now. After that i'll work on handling and braking. So i'm looking for bang for the buck. I'm thinking that nitrous sounds like a good option for that but I'll probably go with some intake work first. I also like the idea of the UDP. Sounds like a win-win situation there and i'm sure the accessories could use a break especially with this high revving engine.

The V8 UDP is not available at the moment. ASP out of Texas is in the process of making some more...but its going to be a little longer. And there is a waiting list of at least 30 people. If you need more information just post a question. You might want to check back here every so often. Me, Stephen Newberg or someone else posting here or on the V8email list will undoubtedly cross post the info when the UDP's become available.


As far as "bang for your buck" the UDP is the best. Other than a little intake and exhaust work...there's not much else we can do. Except NOS of course...but thats not for everyday street use.

Ah, sorry. You are right that it has been very quiet. I have been running the old beast for a few km every month and will actually license her for the road starting 1 June. I plan to take her around to a few Show & Shine outings here on the Island. They are very popular here and there is one somewhere pretty much every summer weekend.

Keep in mind, all of that killer torque must go through a chain inside the transaxle before it gets to the wheels.
Consider a spare trans.
And make sure your camshafts are welded!

This is a major issue with the V8 SHO. I am very sorry if you really didn't know about this. I, for one assumed that everyone knew. Hopefully a previous owner had it welded.
