SHO#7:
I have a 98 GenIII. With just the minor modifications listed below. With a decent reaction time, what should I expect my car to run in a 1/4 mile. If the tires matter I have Michelin Pilot XGT Z4 tires. I would assume that I should brake torque it a little on the line as well. Any help on this would be appreciated, as I have no idea what to set my dial in at.
OK, I've read the responses up to this point, and here's what I recall from back in my "Gen 3" days.
Temperature is the biggie. It is virtually a 0.10 difference for each 10 degrees btween 40F and 90F with no other changes.
The Porterized intake won't show up in 1/4 mile times by itself, but I "porterized" my intake, had the UDP, and turbo mufflers, running in good temps got me into the 14s.
Doing something stupid like having a K&N conical sucking warm air in the engine compartment hurts a lot.
You need some wheelspin to get a good 60' and ET. The beiggest Gen 3 issue is not enough wheelspin. You need 2-3 feet to keep the revs up and not bog. Play with the tire pressure to do this. Go no lower than 35 psi, and go up to 45-50-55 psi in the front to get good wheelspin.
Don't brake-torque, come out just above idle (1,200 rpm or so). Keep a light foot on the brake pedal.
Stage very shallow for best ET.
50-60 psi in the rear tires.
Pull out ALL loose weight.
Practice, Practice, Practice. Ryan Dudek followed my tips and was always 2/10s slower than me. After 75-100 runs in his Gen 3, he picked up those 2/10s just through practice and a lot of runs.
Don't other going to the dragstrip in the summer. We only run prior to May 15th and after September 15th. The colder the temps, the higher the barometer (over 30), and lower humidity (under 50) helps a LOT.
