What grease for DIS?

Okay, I know it's 'White Heat Sink Grease' for the DIS.

Is Heat Sink Compound the same thing?

INSTALLATION

This is the actual grease to use per FORD!

NOTE: The ICM mounting surface must be clean.



Apply an even coat of approximately 1/32 inch of silicone dielectric compound or equivalent to mounting surface of ICM.
Install ICM, retaining bolts, and torque to 22-31 lb. in. (2.5-3.5 Nm) .
Connect both electrical connectors to ICM.
Connect battery ground cable.

I got this to say about that-DIS mod can be heat senitive.talked to old ford eng who brought his'99SHO in for service. Tbird uses same DIS. FORD removed DIS from engine to side wall cause of heat problems. i was having a heat related problem (stall when hot,NOT CPS)so I spaced out my DIS with thick metal washers & wiped that greese away! NO problem,runs just fine! as long as its grounded u'r OK! My intake gets HOT, now DIS is cooler.

It says dialectric compound or similar, is the heat sink compound similar?
I think I have both but I just want to make sure I'm using the right stuff.

Dieletric compund is heat sink compund that does not conduct electricity. Stuff like arctic silver or compunds like that conduct electricity. Most heat sink compunds are dielectric.

Well the difference is that Heatsink compound does not resist moisture. Heat sink compound is not silicone based normally. They both do not conduct electricity and they both transfer heat well but the Dielectric silicone resist the moisture. The choice is yours, some swear to heatsink for whatever reason but all in all its your choice. FWIW, I use and support Dielectric Compound.

A couple points here:

The DIS is supposed to be grounded to the intake neither acts as a heat sink for the other.

Artic Silver compount does not conduct electricity (it may have a very slight capacatence though)

Dielectric grease keeps electrical connections from oxidizing and having dirty contacts. It also repels moisture (spark plug boots).

I used heat sink grease sparingly when I put my DIS back on, you should never goop it on. A very VERY thin layer of it should be applied with a business card. No problems from using heat sink grease.

Another note is thats not what grounds the Module, its purpose is for cooling it.

Just did mine today... the DIS came with a small package of the dielectric stuff and I just smeared it on and bolted up.

Yes I did mine recently and it is designed to heatsink to the crossover tube. The thick aluminum plate on the back of the module is designed to spread the heat from the hot discrete electronic components inside. Theres a lot of current running thru that module so it generates a lot of heat. The purpose of the compound between the intake and the module is to fill air gaps. The thermal conductivity of any type of grease is orders of magnitude better than air. If you bolted it without grease the surface irregularities and the fact that its only bolted in 4 corners will leave very small air gaps under the module. It would run hotter. If Ford calls for dielectric grease they do not want it grounded to the intake. When using thermal compounds you have to be careful. The stuff they put in it (often silveror graphite) that makes it more thermally conductive can also make it electrically conductive.

This is like beating a dead dog. Plain and simple. Both Dielectric grease and heat transfer grease Are similer except in the waterproofing department. Dielectrice grease DOES NOT insulate heat it transfers it.
FWIW: use what you like they both transfer the heat....
Ford Manual states what I typed above for a reason and thats what I stand buy.

To beat it a little more. The conductivity of air is .00076 W/inC. Elastomers, greases (including thermal) etc generally range from .003-.04 W/inC...1-2 orders of magnitude greater. Bottom line is it doesn't matter much what you put in there from a thermal perspective. Also the film is so thin that the heat rise across it is very small, no matter what the material. It does matter from an electrical perspective. If ford calls for dielectric grease they may want electrical isolation...Then again they might just have used it out of convenience cause its used elsewhere. I'm with shoman, if the manual calls for dielectric grease, use it.

Well, hopefully this means that either will work?
Don't get me wrong, I really appreciate the advice and input, but I guess I'm still not certain if one is better than the other?

I hate to have to just use one and hope for the best, but hopefully by the positive responses for both, they are both going to be acceptable??

Beat it all you want.

I am an automotive engineer and product manager for a very large automotive parts manufacture (DANA). I have been doing ignition and fuel system work for almost 20 years now. When I said to use the white heat sink grease (or compound) and not the clear dielectric grease, I am speaking from a point of view with some small amount of experience and not just repeating some hear say written on the walls of a men's room stall.

But hey you want to try something different, be my guest. We (DANA) make the new DIS module (under contract for Ford - Motorcraft) for the V6 SHO engines and I would love to sell more of them wink

Well since we're throwing titles around...I'm a mechanical engineer who works for a military electronics company. Among other things we have to keep the electronics cool enough to survive the rigors of anything from tanks, to aircraft, to satellites. So I too have a little experience in the area. My analysis was solely based on the observations I made. Not being intimate with the design details of the DIS I could not say whether it needed electrical isolation. Since you are more familiar with its design I think you're saying it doesnt need it. Great. If the ford manual is wrong then I'm with you. Heatsink compound is better thermally. BTW have you ever calculated the heat rise across the heat sink compound? I could do a rough calculation if I knew how many watts it was dissipating and the size of the heat generators in the module.

Typically at the dwell circuit limit at say 7.5 amps, has a heat output is something like 75 watts and then as low as maybe 10 watts after discharge. The Engineers use a constant average load value of about 20-25 watts to calculate heat sink capactity.
