What fluid should I use in the Transfer Case/PTO?

Thanks folks. Great information and I really appreciate the guidance.

Let me say this car has been trouble free since I purchased it. I just took it from TX to FL and back last week. It got 24mpg and as an NHRA license holder for my Mustang, I offer that I didn't exactly baby it over that distance. What a great car to travel in.

Finally, compared to this car my 6.0 Powerstroke is more of an occupation in trying to keep it happy. I joke that it is stock but it doesn't have an original part on it! But when it's working, it's awesome. Don't ever consider being a Diesel mechanic.

There are few cars are as happy on the highway as these are, great cruisers. Make no mistake these cars are needy and demand maintenance but it sounds like youre used to it with the 6.0 and prepared with a facility. something to consider with your mileage is the water pump, oil pump, and timing chain. usually recommended when you approach 100k but if youre doing long trips itll come up fast. a couple links that might help you out, here is "the Bible" its a good read with lots of info (the latter half is about his new venture, also a good read)

So everyone uses the same redline that I don't have for the transfer case in the front and the rear diff. Would it be OK to use the same Royal Purple for the front and rear too or do I need to get some 80-90 for the rear as ford recommends?

I use the same Redline lightweight shockproof in PTU and diff.

Out of curiosity, I noticed the Red Line website mentions, “The Lightweight ShockProof can be rated as a 75W140 gear oil but has the lower internal fluid friction of an SAE 30 motor oil.”

Does this mean using the thinner fluid in the PTU could result in reduced drivetrain losses, i.e more horsepower to the wheels? Has anyone here noticed this?

My simple guess is it works like regular motor oil and as it heats it gets thicker in properties - making it more fluid and protective in all temps.

As far as the losses - got me, I don't see it as a gains as much as all condition synthetic protection.
