Could be a leaky windshield. The water runs down behind the dash and soaks into the padding, which just sucks it up like a sponge. It'll go all the way to back. Pull the carpet up to let it dry (this works better in the summer) and good luck finding the leak  I'm still looking for mine.

The "leak event" could have happened months ago and the carpets would still be wet today. eek!

Ahhh the joy of finding leaks. Try this: turn the blower on full speed and close all windows and doors, then pour very soapy water over each seal and seam where a leak could occur and watch for bubbles. Presto! Theres your leak.

Are you loosing coolant?

I had the same problem with a Mustang and an Aerostar and it turned out to be the heater core both times. Food for thought. :D
