Probably overheated the clutch. Did the smell compare to the scent of brake pads after riding on them at high speeds? If so, its the clutch. Just let it cool off and it should return to close to normal.

yup, sounds like instead of spinning your tires you roasted the clutch instead, depending on how bad you did it it might smell for a few days, but should be ok tomorrow. Although if you overheated it enough I believe you can glaze the clutch and lose some clamping power but odd are your fine. Don't quote me on that glazing thing though.

Depending on the clutch and the usage it has on it, it may need replaced after that stunt.

lol... nice sig pic. Anyway, I +1 on the roasting of the clutch surface. You may have very well glazed the pads, which will most definitely affect clamping power. Unfortunately, when that happens to brake pads the solution is to take them out and rough them up on some cement or whatnot. You don't really have that option with the clutch - it'd be easier just to replace it.

yeah x2 on that deal. could have burnt it good.

YamaSHO, that sig reminds me of my Crown vic the last 3 weeks, first fuel pump problems, then ignition, then close to 650 later in diagonsing the wires, and finding 3 broken ones ( someone ooops when doing body work, not me) anyhow i had to laugh at that sig. so true.

Not good. If you feel the clutch slipping you should lift of the throttle.
Not that I haven't done some stupid stuff during my early SHO years.:burnout::3gears:diff pin, :oogle:new trans and clutch.:boohoo:

"for some reason i revved to 6000 and let out the clutch"

"what did i do to my baby??????"

Kinda answered your own question there, didn'tcha! That's kinda like saying "for some reason I drowned my cat and killed my sister".

Nobody "accidentally" revs to 6K then dumps the clutch. :angelnot:

yeah, why would you rev to 6k anyway, it doesn't take that much to spin the tires, not that you shoudl do that anyway:rofl:

OK lets not beat on him now...He needs a clutch...at 80,000 miles. That's not un-heard of.

You will want to find a shop that does a lot of manual transmissions. Most trans shops are pretty good with automatics but are "winging it" with a SHO clutch. You will also want to inspect the subframe(it will need to come OUT...not just tilted).

I am a firm beleiver that when most shops do Taurus trans work, they lower the front of the subframe BUT ONLY LOOSEN the rear...letting it hang...this will be very bad for your subframe(among other things) in the long run. Trust me. Make sure they REMOVE the subframe for your inspection. Take a good look at the subframe bushings. If they need to be replaced, replace them with four(4) 96-99 Taurus REAR subframe insulators. They can be had for $80 for all 4 if you do your homework($10 per half). Subframe bolts should be replaced at the same time. All of this should cost less than $100 extra.

If you show up to the trans shop with new subframe bolts/platenuts(2 recall kits) and insulators, and tell them they can cut the old ones out...you might be able to convince them to save you some money on labor...Removing subframe bolts intact can be a challenge sometimes.

If you have any other questions, just post them here or PM me.

clutch slippage again

some clutches stink forever after you oast them, others dont smell for more then a few minutes.

My old S10 is an example of the latter condition. Last day i owned it i pulled it into the shop by redlining it and using the clutch to control forward speed (and tire smoke at the same time, lol) Took 30 feet of this to reduce the clutch to having the grip of a toddler, but there was almost zero smell.

once it cooled off again i was able to drive it onto the flat bed, even with the front tires pointing 2 different directions

other clutches slip just a tad bit, stink for days afterwards, and they never grip good again, and if they do grip they are borderline on slipping again at the worst time

I did this once on my OEM clutch about, oh, 10k ago. No tire spin, but the revs climbed.

hasn't done it since. I had a bit of clutch smell, but by the time I got home (4miles or so later) it was fine...
