Well I've had the typical problem with my 1993 ATX that everyone else has had. The "slide" downshift from 2nd to 1st. Its had it since 2000 when I bought the car. I even had an extra trans ready for when it went. It was stored in the shed till it turned to junk..the trans in the car never got any better or any worse. Now, my cousin has been begging me to sell him the car. I thought I would throw in a couple of trans sensors to see if it would help.
I raised the the car up. Took a good look at the exhaust...not going to come off with out a set of torches and lots of luck. Dont have torches at home and I been running out of luck lately. Shoot, took me like 15 min just to find the damn VSS. I finally found it when I took the right side tire off. It was behind the right rear motor mount. I thought about it and decided to remove the motor mount to get a better look. Making sure to support the motor with a jack. Sure enough I could reach it with my left hand. It takes a little skill to do it all with your left when your a righty but I did it no problem. Just need a 1/4 ratchet and a deep 10mm socket to take the bolt off the retainer. I made sure you turn the wheel all the way to the left ..helps to get your arm in there better.

Too bad the the trans still shifts the same :(

How long did it take? I noticed that way after I removed my motor/trans assembly. I also noticed that the rear exhaust manifold removed would help some, too. Just curious as to how long it took you from the start of removing the rear motor mount?

The VSS can be unhooked in a couple places in the harness...make sure it is hooked up at the VSS and then upstream in the engine compartment by where the rear 02 hooks up.

I would say 1 hour start to finish with out removing any exhaust.
I did notice a diffrence but I think it a little too late.

Okay, I know this is kind of an old thread, but I have a question for DukeofSHO. How do you get the 2 upper bolts off the motor mount? There is absolutely no room to get a wrench in there.

If I remember right, I used a short socket and a 3/8 ratchet. It did take a while, you can only turn the bolt an 1/8 of a turn at a time.

I got the motor mount off, could see the VSS, but there was no way I could get the VSS off. And even if I did, I don't think I could have gotten it back on.
