We just had our first snowfall of the year and while driving to the store I noticed the car started to shudder whenever the tires started to spin. The roads were slick enough that it was almost impossible to get moving from a stop without spinning the tires and everytime the tires broke loose the car would start to shudder big time. It almost feels like clutch chatter. Over the last 6 months or so I have replaced both halfshafts, front and rear motor mounts, brake pads and rotors, new tires and had an alignment done. I have only noticed this once before and that was when I got on the gas one day when it was raining and the tires broke loose and started to shudder. Its almost like the car begins to bounce like both front tires werent round or had a flat spot in them. The car drives smooth otherwise. Any ideas on how to diagnose this?

btw...its a 1990 MTX

Thanks....jmkinmsp

This is normal and it is called wheel hop. That's what happens when the tires spin with a front wheel drive car. To get more traction in the snow, start off in second gear.

Is your car equipped with ABS?

I've driven front-wheel drive cars in the snow for over 20 winters. Wheel hop is something you learn to avoid by learning to take out with care. your's sounds excessive.
