Took the front valve cover off and saw this... ugh. Anything I can do / should be doing to improve this?

Thanks

Been using whatever the cheap stuff is they use at jiffylube.

I've only had the car for about 10k miles, only had it changed twice. I blame the previous owners :(

Suggestions?

Frequent oil changes with a quality oil will prevent that. Not bulk crap oil that oil changing chains like to use.

Daaaaaaaaayyyyyuumm!! :omg:

I had the covers off on my 92 at 180,000 miles or so, and it looked like it just came from the factory. I don't even an Rx treatment would fix that much buildup. :frown:

I wouldn't do anything about it. If you run an enging oil flush through, it's going to clog your oil pickup and you'll risk engine damage (happened to me, and a friend)

I'd just run a good conventional, like GTX high-mileage or valvoline max life, or a synthetic. Also, use a good oil filter like a purolater pure-one or a mobil 1. There's also a max life filter out (made by purolater) that is "supposed to" remove more sludge (dont ask how)

Over time, it may start to clean itself out.

Get three bottles of Auto-RX. First one use regular dino oil and change the filter at 750 miles, change the oil at 1500 and new filter. Add another bottle of Auto-RX and change the oil at 2000 miles and a new filter. Add the third bottle and change oil at 3000 miles and a new filter..

Take off the valve covers and be amazed.

Wow, looks like I'm going to be trying that auto-rx stuff. Looks like it really did a number on the buildup in that guy's engine!

You only change your oil every 5k?

No, I don't change my oil every 5k. I am a little overdue for my 3rd change, but I'm sure I'll be doing it more often now. I will also be doing my rod bearings in the next month or so probably, so I'll be able to clean the crap out of the pan while I'm in there.

Ditto. And while you have the covers clean off as much of that crud as you can. The heads of the cam bearing bolts will have puddles of thick oil residue on them, clean it out. The more you can shovel out with a small screwdriver and shop vac, the better.

I agree with using AutoRX. I used it in my old 3.0 and it did quiet a job. AutoRX does no just strip off the junk all at once, it softens it so it can be "absorbed" with the oil and then filtered out. That's why it's very important to follow the directions or you will clog up your oil filter.

10k on a motor I would have changed the oil in the following manner:

0k as soon as I got the car home regardless of what the owner told me.
3k
6k
9k

so I would be 1/3 of the way thru my 4th oil change had this car been mine.

Do the auto rx, then get out a bible and swear that you will start on a clean slate and change it every 3k.

autorx is 23 bucks a bottle when you buy 3 bottles. I'm on my 1st treatment currently just to keep her clean.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Looks like I'll be changing my oil more regularly (This normally isn't a big problem for me, I'm just a bit overdue at 4k now, but I certainly should have changed it right when I got it.), using the Auto-RX, and taking a shop vac and screwdriver to her

Oh yeah, now I have to redo about 75% of my valve lash crap. I had been using a little too much effort in getting the feeler gauge in there :bonk:

Whoever treated their SHO like that should be tarred and feathered.

I mean, if you don't have the smarts, skills or courage to change your own oil then you shouldn't be owning such a fine vehicle in the first place.

That's why God created Chevrolets... :laugh_ti:
