I posted a while back about a weird wobbling noise coming from the valve cover. i ripped into the front of the engine replaced the timing belt. when i started the car up the noise was gone yeay. then it came back a month later. now I was probing around with a stethoscope and it sounds like it was coming from the valve cover. Seamed like the rear. could this be the problem. the rear valve covers leak like an sob (the front ones do to but technically they only leak from the galleries the rear leaks from the side valve covers.) it leaks around the chain. I was resealing the valve covers and giving the car new plugs. i had just finished the front one and began to torque the valve cover bolts on the front to 12 ft-lbs when on the third bolt from the left (the top one) POPed. snapped the damn bolt. probably snapped at 11 ft-lbs. anyway I need the car to start school monday. I'll be going to school then work Monday-friday from 9-9 so I need this damn rattletrap to get to school. so i grabbed some high tack gasket and some black rtv sealant and stuck the bolt back in there. put the car back together with only new wires and new front valve covers. ran it tonight and it isn't leaking oil. I know it will eventually leak oil. so I need to go back in there anyway next saturday. point being... if there is a problem with the valve cover I'm ripping it open anyway what should I look for. the inside of the front one looked brand new.

also the car when put back together still bogged like an SOB. i assume it is mainly the spark plugs that help this problem.

thanks again guys :thumb:

The torque specs on those valve cover bolts is 8-11 lb-ft. If the torque wrench that you were using erred on the high side by even a few lb-ft then you could have easily applied 50% more torque then they were designed for.

I have snapped one of those bolts too. Also from an incorrectly set torque wrench. You can replace the broken one with one you can access from the front without pulling the intake so all you have to do is install the new bolt when you get it.

wha...? i think you are under the impression i didn't take the intake manifold off.

how did you get the old one out of there. did a small easy out pull it right out. I'm worried i won't be able to get it out with an easy out. i assume it would be pretty easy considering it only has 12 or so ft-lbs on it and its so damn small. or is that not logical. :bonk:

damnit... why didn't the phoenix project guide say 8-11 if i would've known that i would have set the damn wrench to 8 or 10 and been ok. :madflame:

The SHO engine has both a timing belt and a timing chain. Look on the valve cover closest to the drivers side, that big bulge is the chains/bears...
