A little story:

4 or 5 years ago, I picked up an "off the shelf" $100 radar detector. It was supposedly a good one, made by Cobra. After 15000000000000 false readings and scattered responses to actual threats, It found its way into the dumpster. Since then, Ive been without a radar detector, and until recently I considered them useless.

I stand corrected. :hail:

Two weeks ago I bit the bullet and bought a V1. I had done as much research as I could via internet sources and had decided that even being slightly less sensitive (range) to the leading ****** the V1 was a superiour "investment"

It came last week and I couldnt be happier. This little black box is amaizing.
The accuracy is stunning, and the arrows have now (just after a week of use) become a requirement of mine. No more "beep" and looking around. This thing allerts the user right where the source threat is, and WELL before it is in view. A "sixth sense" if you may.

The only place you can get a fresh, new V1 is directly from V1.

I looked on ebay for older, cheaper ones, but add the cost of a cheaper old one and the update required to bring it up to speed, and you are spending all the same.

If you are willing to spend $400 on a doo-dad, that bleeps, barks, and chirps... Just get it straight from V1 :)

I still cannot believe how good this thing is.

To those who say "Ah, detectors are just early warning signs of getting a ticket!". I say hogwash!

Just yesterday I was getting on the freeway, and you know how some of us SHO owners like to open it up on the onramp??

I dove into the tight onramp, and just as I was going to hammer it, the V1 got a reading. STRONG ONE, and under Ka band. So I eased onto the freeway and saved the gas. Sure enough, a few moments later, a CHP rolled by traeling the other direction.

They ran about $400 back when I bought mine (just after getting my second ticket in one day) since then I've reduced the number of tickets per day, however as stated in the owners manual "radar locaters will not prevent getting tickets, they'll just assist in getting fewer of them". If you insist on driving out in front, fast, and space out occasionally they will only alert you to the ticket you just got!

Indeed, I drove with a V1 for the last two weeks, and they are incredible. The only issue I had was that Colorado State Patrol uses something it doesn't detect... Grr!

Radar detectors do a good job at detecting radar that is ON, and the V1 is the best. The only problem is, if you get a smart officer (or maybe just a sneaky one) they use instant on radar, and it doesn't matter if you have a radar detector, because by the time it alerts, you've already been clocked;)

Chris, it's likely Pop, check the ticket. Pop is contestable, as it's faster than conventional radar, but isn't nearly as reliable. At least, that's what I think I remember hearing 4th-hand. :)

I have an ****** Passport 8500 and a Bel in-grille. The in-grille picks up some things just a tad faster than the ****** behind the 95's solar glass, but the ****** is usually up to a half-mile or so faster than the Bel.

MA also has something my ****** turns a blind eye to.

Agreed. Currently I have an older Whistler radar detector that works pretty good up here in ND, where all the equipment is ancient. I have only gotten one speeding ticket since I bought the detector (which I have had for 3 years now) and that day I wasn't speeding, and the detector wasn't on. :corn: I think its because I just put new 225/60/R16's on and was going exactly 75 on my speedo in a 75 zone. Officer said I was doin 82.

I've almost always used Escorts, and I got an 8500 for the Focus since that's what I drive most of the time. That thing is freaking amazing...it's the only detector I've ever seen that is sensitive enough to provide enough warning for the stationary automated radar vans that they use around here. The way those are engineered they're nearly impossible to detect (narrow beam at a diagonal across the street being monitored...not much energy until you're in the beam and then it's too late), so I was very pleasantly surprised that this thing picks them up from a couple of hundred yards away. It must be getting the low-power energy from an antenna sidelobe or something, but so far it's been detecting them reliably with a lot of warning.

That's a big enough deal that I'm thinking of replacing the older ****** in my truck with one of these.

Valentines are nice...I've used them and a number of friends have them. They're not for me, though.

Some folks seem to forget that a radar signal has to reach your car AND return back to the source with enough strength for the radar unit to make a speed determination. For the target vehicle to detect that same signal the only requirement is that the signal reaches you with enough strength to sound the alarm. In other words, with good equipment you can detect the radar signal from farther away than would be required for that same signal to clock you.

With instant on you can pick up scatter from other vehicles/objects before you are within direct sight of the radar gun.

I too hear that this POP crap isn't an acceptable method of clocking. In other words, go to court on those. And of course if you get hit with POP, make sure you have no tailgaters and slam on the brakes to scrub off extra speed ASAP.

My 10 year old V1 still works great. That said, the new units are much improved (hard to imagine) and so are some of the radar guns out there. I probably ought to start thinking about getting a new one. It doesn't pay to have the factory update the older ones.

They don't refurbish your old one and send it back to you. You send them your old one, they send you a brand spanking new one same-day. Since yours is quite old V1 probably wont give you much for it, you'd probably do better to sell it on Ebay.

Yeah I know they give you a new one. I checked several years ago. I'd get something like $20 or so...some insulting number like that. Makes more sense to give the wife my old one and get a new one for me!

I just got an ****** Passport 8500 X50, I couldn't justify the extra $100 for the Valentine 1 after doing my research and reading many reviews. So far I am very satisfied.

In case your wondering this was prompted by me getting a ticket on Monday. :hpoop:
