Hey all,

I need to replace the weatherstripping on my trunk due to some minor leaking when it rains. Is there anything in particular I should know before getting started? Where's a good place to get replacement weatherstripping?

I also noticed that I am missing a rubber "bumper" on the drivers' side - see the attatched picture. This means that there's some play in the trunk after it's latched. Is there an official name for this part, and where should I look for one?

Thanks!

Mine leaked when I first got the car too. OI removed the weatehr strippign and softened it up using a solvent and cleaned it all up to make it more supple. Then I put it on so the seam is at the top of the trunk instead of at the latch. Also the light wiring that follows the drivers side trunk "arm" was geting pinched and woudl fall on teh weatehrstrippign when the trunk was closed. I secured the wires so that this would not happen any longer.. No leaks yet!

Although that's a great tip FoeSho offered, you may want to consider replacing with new as these trunk seals are still available through Ford for about 60 bucks IIRC. I'm sure the "bumpers" are available too, but you could just as easily make do with one from a boneyard.

How the weather up there in Alaska?!

Thanks for the tips. I went ahead and ordered new weatherstripping from a local Ford dealership for $81, it should be here Thursday or Friday.

Mels, the weather up here has been chilly, considering that it's July. Upper 50s and low to mid 60s the past few days.

I'll call around and try to find a bumper in a local junkyard. It looks like it's the same piece as on all Gen 2 Tauruses.

Don't forget to check the tail light seals. I used 1/4 or 1/2 sticky backed foam weather stripping from Home Depot. Rolls on like pinstriping.

New trunk seal is in. It really was cake to install.

Now I'll just need to run for a few days with the carpet out to make sure it's completely dry in there...
