The trigger voltage for the solenoid of a gen 1 and gen 2 starter is 12V correct?

That's correct, though it will work with less or more to some degree.

Both Gen 1 and 2 solenoids need a ground to battery negative also.

What are you trying to do?

Swap in a gen 2 starter to a gen 1. Im keeping the existing gen1 solenoid just to make wiring easier (already have a battery cable from the trunk cut to fit and installed.) Im going to jumper the starter trigger on the gen 2 starter to the power connection. The ground for the gen 2 solenoid should be the starter body/engine block.
