I have a 93 (automatic) with 90K miles and the body is in good to great shape. The tranny had been hesitating to shift into 1st when coming to a stop for quite sometime, but only when it was cold. The tranny finally went 2 days ago. I really like the car, but I'm no enthusiast - I'm not one to put money into mods. How much am I looking at for a tranny?

My 93 ATX, also went TU. Only speaking from my own experience, I consulted every trans shop in the area. The first response was "Oh, boy!" eek! Prices ranged from $1,600-$2,000. I believe my final cost was $1,860. That being said, much of that was for the removal and replacement. I believe the actual cost of the tranny rebuild was about $600. That was the kit, new cylinder, and new shift cable. Was it worth it?? I'm in the same boat as you. I'm not looking to modify too much, but mine also is in very good condition so to me it was. Hope that gave you a start :) Good luck!

I used to work for a company that had a lot of Taurus company cars. There was a fairly high transmission failure rate, especially for those that were driven in hilly or mountainous areas. The official policy was to service the transmissions every 30,000 miles. I put 133,000 miles on mine without any tranny failure before the company replaced the car. Of course, I was driving in Florida. I do recall having my SHO serviced once and seeing 3 or 4 SLO automatics on the lifts for tranny repairs. Apparently it is not a very robust design.

For a quality rebuild, you are looking at anywhere from $2000-$3000. A Ford rebuilt tranny with a 12/12 warranty (recently reported to be longer now, but is valid at every Ford dealer in the world) is about $1700 PLUS labor. Book labor is about 6 hours, so if your Ford dealer charges $100/hour labor, you'd be looking at around $2300. FPS in Georgia will ship you a rebuilt tranny for about $2200, plus core charge, plus round-trip shipping, plus labor, but if you just drive it as a daily driver it's probably not worth the extra $$$ for their high-performance tranny.

You could also try to find a local shop that rebuilds trannys (this does NOT mean AAMCO!!!), but try to find one with a lot of Ford FWD experience, even better if they have SHO experience. It will probably be the least expensive option, but also the most prone to problems requiring return visits so make sure there is a comprehensive warranty and check them with the BBB, etc.
