the flippin thing absolutely will not lock up with the cruise set, and half the time it won't lock up during normal city driving, and it likes to shudder like a sacred kitten. am i looking at a trans replacement? i did get a code for torque converter failed to lock up 5 times consecutively or something like that.

I believe the TransGo shift kit needs to be installed during an overhaul. You need to tear apart the tranny to install it.

You should plan on paying $500-700 just for the r/r of the tranny. The rebuild itself can run anywhere from under $1000 to over $2000 depending upon how many internal parts are required.
