hey eveyone,

i just bought a 97 black on tan sho with 89600 miles on it. it is my daily driver and i spend roughly 30 minutes on the highway since i know the cams go at constant high speeds. just wondering when the best time to weld the cams and if theyll go when the car hits a certain mileage im hopin 120k :), also if anyone knows how to check if the cams were welded without tearing apart the engine? thanks

Cams can and will go at any time. Might as well save up and get them welded ASAP

The cam sprockets can start to spin at most any time under most any conditions. However, you are well into the prime engine miles territory where the incidence curve would say it happens. I strongly suggest you do not even wait to save up, but rather find the funds somewhere and get the welding done yesterday. You certainly could get lucky and drive it for some time with no problems, but the odds are not with that result.

I'd weld it ASAP from what I've heard.

I don't even own a gen 3 - but IMHO, WELD! :bonk: I would consider not doing it if this has only happened to a handful of people, but it is a proven problem with the gen3, and it WILL happen to your car.....it's just the question of when will it happen??

If you have a GEN III you better weld the cams.
If you have a GEN I/II SHO you better change your rod bearings.

You should be able to take the valve covers off and see whether the cams have been welded already or not. Check out the v8sho.com website and look for pictures of welded cams and stock cams.

Did you buy it from the previous owner or a car lot? The last owner would know. Could backtrack by phone if it was traded on the same lot.
