Which one, there are two idlers, one fixed on the right side and one tensioned on the left. What's the exact problem? Where in AZ are you?

Tom- It's the one on the right top. Thought the water pump had went out because of the loud noise, but when it was tore down to the timing belt noticed that the bearings? or whatever goes in the pulley was gone and the pulley was hitting against the upper timing belt cover and had cracked it. But my backdoor mechanic isn't sure how to put a new one in!! Can you help me? Thanks, Cathy

Tom, It's the one on the top right. Thought my water pump had went out due to the noise it was making, and when it was tore down to the timing belt, noticed that there was no bearings? (or whatever goes in between) the pulley and it was clanging against the upper timing belt cover and had cracked it. My back door mechanic doesn't know how to install a different pulley and I could use all the help you could give me. I live halfway between Phoenix and Tucson. Thanks, Cathy

So it needs a new (or another) bearing and an upper timing cover right? Did the bearing cut the plastic cover or does it look like the belt cut it? If the belt cut straight line grooves in the cover(s), someone probably forgot to put on the beveled washer on the crank gear shaft during the last timing belt change.

Is there any way you could get the car up to our place in Cave Creek?

Remove the tensioner, depress it in a vise, then put a small allen wrench in the hole to keep it from extending back out, put it back on the motor, then pull out the allen wrench.

Thanks TYSHO, I think I have chased the pulley down finally. I found someone on the Internet parting out a car. But if that doesn't go thru I will check out e-bay. Now I just have to figure out how to get my car back together!!

Tom, You are the GREATEST GUY!!! Could I ask 1 more question? How much trouble could I get in if I just put the idler pulley on and put my car back together, skipping changing the timing belt?

I wont tell the police if that's an issue with you.

No, it would be difficult but not a problem. You have to relieve the tension of the idler on the left side though. Tough to do unless you have Ford's little still-in-the-car-tensioner-compressor tool. Otherwise, unbolt the tensioner from the block, compress the tensioner in a soft vice jaw, insert a 1/32 allen wrench in the body and pin, then re-install on the block. When is bolted on solid, remove the allen wrench, allowing the tensioner to push the pulley V-frame against the belt.

Tom, Thanks for not telling the cops on me! ;) And of course I dont have the Ford thingy tool! All I have is a hammer and a screw driver! And the screwdriver I am bending into a 1/32" allen wrench!! So I'm off to try this out. Wish me luck cuz I still have the hammer if it don't work!! Thanks for all your help!!! (And everyone else!!) Cathy

Tom, Say for instance the timing belt was never taken off and you lined up the bolt to the pulley without taking the other tensioner pulley off and you pulled back on the timing belt and everything lined up, and the belt felt tight, would you try to turn over the engine? (Just curious before I try to start my car) Cathy

...... Cathy. Having just done this job last weekend (on Tom's car no less)...If the timing belt never came off....and I mean not even a tooth worth, you can always try starting the car. I dont know how you did it though, that tensioner keeps the belt pretty tight. If you were able to take the upper pully off, get the new one back on and put the bolt back in without stripping it, then you are pretty good...strong too.

Like Michael said, try it. If you got that new idler bearing in there without releasing the tension on the tensioner side, wow, you (or Bud) are good and should open up a SHOSHOP like right away. ;)

And sell it asap.
