What is a valve shim? where are they located, and what do they do? Also, how can you tell when they're about to kick the bucket? Can you buy them from Yamaha? This is my first SHO, after all. My Bronco didn't have valve shims, or if it did I didn't notice them.

A valve shim is what the cam lobes rub up against as they turn.

When you hear alot of thicking sound coming from the valve covers and intake, or youre past due for a 60k or 120k whatever the case may be.

Yes you can by shims from Yamaha.

Go to www.shotimes.com for alot of info on your car.

Don't feel bad, most cars do not utilize valve shims. A lot of motorcycles do, and a handful of other cars.

SHOTimes has a good write-up on the procedure, and why it is important.
