Picked up a 92 mtx sho yesterday.

Car hadn't been driven for about two three years- picked it up for $600.

Changed the battery, took it to Chevron, put in two quarts of oil, a gasoline additive, filled up the anti freeze, and took her for a drive.

While I was pushing it ( as in driving fast) the gas pedal stuck and I was redlined in first or second with the clutch in for about ten/ twenty seconds until I realized I needed to **** the engine.

Car started fine and on the way home it died( as it had already done a couple of times in the previous hour), but then she would not start again.

Had to jump it in a way and dropped it off at local firestone.

Engine was making funny noises--- they said it could be a blown rod, or maybe the lifters are stuck.

Who knows- but we will find out in two or so hours.

Any idea where or how much I can get a new engine (block) from?

I may also need a new clutch- shop says around 1000.

Thanks!

We don't have lifters. Other than that, our motors don't mind being redlined. Did you get the Oil Pressure light during any of this?

Oil light was coming on momentarily when clutch was pushed in - and then would disappear when clutch released.

No lifters- okey dokey.

Positive the gas pedal was stuck- I had to reach down and unstick it:oogle:

Bad news good news

Bad news

Shop says around 1000 to fix- and the said probably take it somewhere else ( due to inexpierence)

Drive the car away- and it sounds like shit!

Like there is something draggin on the ground!

And then it wont stop stalling- every time it goes under 1k it stalls.

Drive for about a mile- aprk for 15 min ( running an errand),
start drive home ( car stalling more and more)- and then a huge cloud of smoke pops up (from under hood), the car locks up (luckily no-one around as brakes wont work), and I let her just float if you will into a nearby parking lot.

As I get out, I see a puff of oil smoke come from tail pipes.

Damn I think- at least the shop could have told me not to drive it ( btw I have heard great things about this shop from people that know cars and such)

So I have it towed home, and a friend of mine who works as a mechanic at ford comes over.

Hydrolocked- four quarts (approx) over the limit.

AKA -- not my cars fault.

Good news

I will be at the shop tommorow morning @ 7:45, waiting for a fix.

Hopefully the engine blew a rod, then they will HAVE to replace it.

Any thoughts?

I thing that the likelihood of them replacing your motor at their expense is a pipe-dream. It's a $600/16 year old car for heaven's sake.

Just leave it at home, buy a replacement 3.0 (I could barely give mine away a few years ago so they're cheap!), do the proper maintenance on it prior to installing it and install it.

Personally, I think you threw a rod bearing. Many times when a car hasn't been driven for a long period of time the car is not allowed the proper amount of time to effectively oil parts that haven't been oiled in a long time. Moisture in the system compounds the problem, especially if it had been sitting for 2-3 years without being run. It is always best to disconnect the DIS and prime the system a few times prior to actually starting the car and when you do start it, allow it to run for a good 1/2 hour to 45 minutes before driving. I'd be willing to bet that wasn't done.

Who knows though, maybe you'll get lucky.

So let me get this straight....

Redline engine for 20 seconds, Starts knocking.

Take it to the shop.

Shop turns you away.

Continue driving the car knowing it has a serious issue.

And now you are expecting the shop to pay for a new engine?

Ok...

I had the shop do an inspection and they tried to fix the unknown problem at the time by changing the oil (and putting heavier oil in), and adding some sort of engine cleaner, and they did an inspection of sorts.

I know they arent trying to rip me off as the only charged $40 for that service, and the going rate in Marin is 60 to 80 just for an oil change with synthetic.

For those of you spitting your coffee out your nose, it was 120 to 160 to get my oil on my merc done, and the going rate is between 90 and 120 an hour up here.

Ugh!

I'm not really to worried about all this- I got the SHO cause I like it- I like the idea of a sleeper fixer upper that no-one has let alone knows about.

I like something I can fix myself, or with my friends, or take to a shop,

I love a challenge!!!

And the reward at the end of the long road--- thats why were SHO owners.

If you want a car to fix yourself, you got one.

Now, I'm not sure why you chose to drive it with internal issues. But you probably will need awhole new engine now (cheaper than the repair).

I'm with beth on this one (bizzy) just change out the engine, if you want a direct swap find a 3.0L, you can get them for under 100 bucks EASY, maybe even free. Or you can do a 3.2L swap (search it that will explain it all) but next time your gas peddle sticks do one of 2 things, **** the engine instantly or 2 (you say you were in 1st or 2nd) put it in 5th and hit the brakes (this way you still have power brakes and steering) the car will have no acceleration in 5th at that speed and you will be able to safely come to a stop without to much trouble and stall the engine, or turn it off when you are at 5mph.:thumb:

I think an engine swap would be too much work, at least for me anyway. I say cut your losses and junk it.

If you want another SHO test drive a few, and buy another one.

If he junks it that's just one more SHO that's off the road. Probably gone. That is not the right attitude for a vehicle like this that we are all trying to keep around. Just like the MTX-IV that we will eventually run out of, bodies and blocks are in limited supply too. "They ain't re-poppin' these things!"
