I actually have two questions about new wheels.

First: I'm kind of stuck on deciding which tire size to use with my new 17" RS Limited MASE series rims for the SHO. 215/50/17 or 225/50/17. I know that the 225s are a wider tire, and would probably help with picking up some extra traction that a FWD like the SHO needs. But the (215s) lower profile tires would also add to the appearence of the new rims. I'm stuck in thought here, I need some opinions!

Second: Has anyone ever used Hankook tires? I can pick up a set of four for around $350 shipped brand new. If I were to get the 215s, I'd get the Y-Speed Ventus Sport K104 series. If I were to go with the 225s, I'd get the H-Speed Ventus HRII H405 series.

Any input is greatly appreciated!

I went with 235/45WR-17 on my 17X8 rims. The tires I bought were Yokohama ES100. They seem to be very stick summer tires. I have no snow or much rain where I live so I alway go with summer only tire; a huge difference in performance compared with all seasons.

OH you didn't know
235/45-17 with Continental Extreme Contact tires, depending if you drive the car in snow. If not, Yokohama AVS ES100. If you can find them, Cooper Zeon 2XS tires.

Ditto, although a 225/50 is going to have almost the same profile.

Going with a smaller size is going to make the ride quality horrible, and risk bending those fancy new rims should you hit a pothole.

Sometimes the 215/50s look a little small on my stock height car. My next tires are going to be 225/50s

Apparently I don't have any larger pics hosted right now... but here's one and there's another in my sig with 215/50s..

I believe Mark (Wuzzer) purchased these tires for his G3?

Maybe you could contact him for more of a real world SHO driver account of the tires.

I also highly recommend the Goodyear F1 GS-D3 for a top-notch three season tire. Car and Driver also had excellent things to say about them in the December 2005 issue in a test of 11 maximum performance tires. They selected the F1 GS-D3 as top tire of the group. See the story here.

I am on the 14th set of tires on my SHO and I have consistently selected from the "ultra high" and "maximum performance" categories as defined by TireRack.com. Of all the many tires that I have rolled on, the Goodyear F1 GS-D3 has combined the the highest combined rating in dry traction, wet traction, steering response, braking, road noise, tread wear and ride comfort. The F1s do not have the stiffest sidewalls and give up a small amount of transient quickness because of it, but they return one of the most compliant, bump absorbing rides I have experienced from a performance oriented tire.

Tire Rack does a lot of testing. Check out their comparison results for an instrumented look at possible choices.

The tire size closest to the original 215/65-16 tire's diameter in the 17" rim size is the 225/50-17. I have found a limited number of selections in this configuration for my wife's Maxima SE. The Avon Tech M500 has proven to be superior to the Yokohama ES100 in traction, wear and quietness in the 225/50-17 profile mounted on a 7" wide rim on the Maxima.

more rubber, more HP.....
I also recommmend the Goodyear F1 GS-D3's. They are the best dry/wet weather high performance tire IMHO when ambient temps are above 32 deg F.

I would _not_ drive them in snow or ice, however; in those conditions they have absolute _zero_ traction..
