So based on the advice here in this forum about maintaining a SHO - I had my PTU oil changed. The description of the oil @28K miles and I am the original owmer... gunmetal grey. Here is a picture of the magnetic drain plug. By the way could find a more inconvenient place to hide this fcker?

Now my car is a 2014 - how do I find out what iteration - version ofmine? I was reading there was 3 versions? I did find the sticky PTU thread - so I assume I am on version one PP.

Any advice? I know the car is a maintenance nightmare and that PTU is not a reliable part by far.

Found the 3rd or 2019 last version on Tasca, new $1275 approx.

Can someone describe the symptoms of failure, things to keep an ear out for etc?

Thanks @yaycandy

OK, so doing this oil service at 28K was perfect timing before the grenade shrapnel keeps shredding the PTU gears.

Failing symptoms, just so I know what tk expect?

I have 102k miles still on the stock PTU. Tuned for the last 60k and the last 40k at 500 whp. Only been down the track 300 or so times (about an inch and a half stack of times lips) you might be a little too nervous IMO.

OK I will just keep changing the oil on a regular interval. All good just was looking for failure info.

Are you wearing gloves, or are you the elephant man?

Pay more attention to the fluid than the shavings. If it's not paste then you should be good.

@Majestic <ROFL> Elephant man - LOL - I was working with a friend of mine who works at a local shop. He was holding the plug (with gloves) while I took the pic. To defend him - he has worked as an advanced lead mechanic for 25+ years, without gloves his hands are gnarly.

Hey be glad you have a drain plug with a magnet!!
The rest of us have to use the crappy fill hole and suck out what we can from there.
So we don't even know if there are any metal shavings in the PTU!

I follow the advice on this list and have 90K on the stock PTU (2013 MKS EB). About 5 fluid changes so far and now it comes out a nice dark honey color and NOT that horrible black crap that comes out with factory fluid!

I change ALL fluids regularly! RDU, PTU,Transmission way before the factory intervals. It's the cheapest insurance you will ever buy. Use the fluids recommended on here for added protection. Note that I have only used Motorcraft fluids so far.
