Hello to all again,

Curious, how difficult is it to take out the "Saxacone(sp?)"? I read up on all the directions on V8SHO.com and they stated that it was about a 45 min. job.

What advantage will that give? More HP, better sound from within? Any ideas. Just for S & G's I opened up the air filter box and removed the filter and started it up and "holy crud" I must admit it sounded flippin' awesome!!

I know that I can't drive it like that in fear of getting dirt up inside it but if I remove the saxacone will I get the same sound as no filter and opened box or do I need to install a home made "cold air intake with cone filter" to get that sound?

Thanks for any help!!

I did it in my car, and I may have taken the round-a-bout route, but I took off the tire and the wheel well. there are i believe 2 or 3 screws, one on the strut tower, and 2 in the fender well. You might have to contort your wrists, and your body to see how to get it out. I would say yeah 30-45 minutes.

if you are planning on putting in a CAI in the near future take it out. If not put a cone filter on your MAF and keep the saxacone for a "factory" CAI. IMO of course

Thanks for the input. Do you have a cold air intake on your sho? If so, were did you put the jcone filter? I was told by some guys at work that you could put the cone filter up in the front bumper somewhere, but away from an area that would be exposed to possible water intake from a wet road. What do you think?

Thanks again for all the input.

I removed the intire intake and left the stock airbox as is. That let's it suck in hot air so it's not really a performance mod. Makes it sound good though. It's not hard to do either. I'd have a look at the instructions and then just have at 'er. Jack the front driver's side up and continue to remove screws and bolts and clips till you get in the inner fender well. Once in there rip the two pieces apart and remove the lower half. Then I remove the entire airbox as well as the upper half of the saxacone.

This spring I plan on putting the modified saxacone back in place. The bottom of the saxacone is a bell-mouth like shape which is supposed to be ideal and the location of it is a pretty good spot for most people in my opinion. Then I plan to do something with the upper half and the airbox. Not quite sure yet. When I gets warmer I'll go out and play with it. I'm thinging about making my own airbox with a cone filter inside and expand the opening to the fender well to put some sort of bigger pipe in there.

From a performance standpoint, removing the sax and replacing it with some better flowing cold air intack to get more air flow to the stock box is a very good idea. I do not remember the exact numbers, but it was something like the sax only provides about 1/3 of the air volume that the engine is capable of using. They can be found somewhere on V8sho.com. You just have to look around a bit.

While you are there, you really should look at the Porter version of an intake modification. It is close to the simplest way to get the engine all the cold air it needs, my minor alteration of his version being even simpler. However, if you are looking for sound rather than HP, a Porter or modified Porter is not the way to get it. There is pretty much no noticeable sound change from it. I like sleepers, myself, rather than advertising, so I consider this a good thing. You may have different tastes. :)

I took out the airbox and the saxacone and put a cone filter on. I left from the MAF back (toward the TB and intake) alone. The sound that the car has at WOT is relly nice.

I am planning on getting rid of that plastic thing that connects the MAF to the TB and getting some stainless steel to use....

Here is an alternative, I hopped on the web and got an OEM airbox from a 3.0 Taurus for 15 bucks.
Took a small hand saw and off came the bottom half of the air box leaving a nice frame with the clamps and 2 of the 3 mounting points. Now the panel filter is sitting out in the open held tightly in place by a stocklooking setup. I left the saxicone in so that for Warranty Issues I put the stock airbox back in. Prep time 20 minutes from start to finish. Sound=Incredible, when the secondaries kick in the thing screams but at cruise it is hardly notable. Performance wise it should be along par with the Open cone. Also no need to reset the computer because you move nothing. I will try to get a pic of my little invention. But for anyone with a warranty wanting to do something easy that will be easy to pop back in this is the way to go. No screws, don't have to pull the tire, and best of all after you have cut the frame from the used airbox (sand the rough edges smooth) you have what looks to be OEM from the top with all the open breathing at the bottom.

That is a very interesting endeavor....please show us the pics cuz I would not know what a stock V6 Taurus engine even looks like let alone the airbox.

Maybe I should clarify I have a 98 SHO, my buddy at work who happens to have a 3.0 OHV taurus wanted to see my engine. After he looked at it he made mention that his engine was MUCH smaller so I decided to take a look. He was right, and it turns out that the bottom half of his air box is the same as ours. Now originally I was going ot have one of the guys at work fabricate a simple filter frame, but I decided to look into a junked taurus airbox. It came in, I took it apart and trew the top half away didn't need it(won't fit anyway) and cut about 1 inch down from were the filter is seated. This made a nice little frame to seat my air filter on. I pulled my stock box(bottom Half only) and clipped on my frame with a K&N Panel. Looks great sounds great, and it is breathing easy. I will try to scrounge up a camera at work tomorrow and post up the finished product. Its cheap, easy, and looks great. Oh and since I am under Warranty I can swap out the frame for the box in about 5 minutes. If we go to the dealer we are back to stock..

Ok I have pics for anyone wanting them, just let me know. I will send them to you via e-mail since I have no webpage setup. These are of the setup in the vehicle, also a another airbox with the basic pattern to us to cut from. Looks pretty much stock, has 2 of the 3 mounting points, (you can have all 3 if you want) and it would really work well with the cold air intake. Enjoy...

Sounds kinda like my mod airbox. Essentially on mine the side is cut out completely, and it sucks a great deal more air. Just as GOTpsi said, when the secondaries kick in it sounds like a muscle car, and I'm certain it does something for performance too. I too have a K&N filter, and my box is a modified '97 SHO airbox from a friend's car. He gave me his mod-box when he moved up to one of those cone-shaped K&N filters on his '97 SHO. Mine is a '98, black with 37k miles.
