Ok, I'm planning on rebuilding the suspension and steering on my 93 MTX. I want to replace the rack and lines on the steering. It gets a bump/play when going around turns or pretty much when going straight down the road. I know i'm going to have to flush the whole system and there is alot of good advice on the forum but is there any other hints or trick to doing it, anything to look out for. Also is there anyway to install a filter inline some where to make sure it will keep out contaminets. I'll also be replacing the subframe bushings with aluminum to get rid of any play and be doing strust and springs and any blushings that come up. I'm leaning towards tokico and eibach. Any susgestions or comments are welcomed. thanks

Check the sliding collar under the dash. If worn it can account for at least an inch of loose play in the steering wheel. Any suspension or steering part can cause play, just check everything out.

fixing loose steering

From shotimes a reader writes;
If you own a 91'-93': In a 91 they changed the design of the steering shaft from a solid shaft to a slip type shaft. The shaft connects the steering wheel to the rack pinion. Wher the shaft connects to the rack, it has a coupling with a pinch bolt. He says that for about 3 years this bolt wasnt being tightened enough. On these years this pinch bolt is possibly the problem.

To fix it remove the three nuts holding the lower steering boot to the firewall. Slide the boot up and out of the way. Turn the wheel so you can get to the pinch bolt, tighten the bolt and at the same time move the wheel back and forth. You will be able to see the coupling moving on the shaft. Tighten the 10mm bolt only untill the looseness goes away. He says he uses an impact but is very careful not to over tighten. Cause if the bolt breaks you'll be in a world of hurt. He doesn't know the exhact torque setting but states that anything that is published is going to be wrong
