Supercharger? Worth it?

Recently I've been thinking over the idea of maybe adding a supercharger of some sort. How much more HP would this give me? How much would a good supercharger cost me? (I heard 4k with the installation kit) Can the transmission handle it? What kind of quarter mile and 0-60mph times should expect? Can the engine handle it? All these questions....it is still a nice idea and i'll still think on it. Let me know your opinion on this subject and help me out on some information on this too if possible...Thanx

A supercharger kit for the V8 SHO will run you at least 4K to 5K total. This would include quite a bit...but thats on the low end cost wise. It could be even higher. Plan on going through at least a tranny or two if you don't do a full re-build with a Trans-Go shift kit...and even then the extra horses are going to be tough on her.

The one thing about a S/C is that the power is there all the time. Plenty of people have run NOS through these engines and tranny's with no problems...but its sporadic at the track extra power.

The SHOShop is the only one with any type of S/C in production...and its in the experimental stage right now. Should be in the area of 325 wheel hp. It should get you to the high 13's in the 1/4.

Is it really worth it. Not for me. I love this car as a daily driver...but I'll be damned if I'm going to go through tranny's and the extra expenses when I can get a new Marauder next year and deal with a car that in its stock form can run 14's and with $500 in bolt on's will run in the 13's. Just my observations though.....


Go for it...but have some extra $$$$ just in case....

The engine should be able to handle it. Its the rest of the stuff (tranny mostly) that you would have to worry about.

I looked into a S/C Group buy. I would need 10 buyers to get a $500+ discount. A very good deal, but very hard to find 10 people with $4-5K ready to buy.

If you are interested, The SHO Shop has a TURBO/ BLOWER that is nearly ready for sale. I think it runs for less than $4000, like in the $3500 area. At www.v8sho.com they have a lot information.

Hey, I looked several times on the SHO Shop site and there no mention of the test and tuning of this kit for our cars. Where is this info comming from.... just curuios. They should at least put an link so the interested Gen III owners can see how it going and when it will be available.

Guys, PLEASE go visit the V6 area regarding my dealings with Vadim & a blower kit. I'm still waiting after 7 weeks, for a kit that he swore was "in stock" & ready to ship out the door - all I had to do was overnight him the bank check. To date, I'm still missing the fuel pump (ordered from Joe Scott today), and the battery relocation kit (available elsewhere). I've heard the horror stories about Gen 3 guys fronting money & still not having the kit after MONTHS.

I'm not saying don't do it, just think twice before you front the cash. If Bob can get a group buy going, great. But, I'd make it a "here's a 10% deposit from everyone; deliver the kit & proof of tooling, etc" first. Good luck folks!

hmph, well maybe supercharger is not the way to go on the Gen III. It is still an option but it seems to me like too much work (transmission problems) and money. Oh well back to the drawing board.

My sentiments exactly....

We're just not going to get 400 hp out of these cars. Heck...even 350 would be tough and very expensive. They weren't built for it. They were built to be a wonderful highway car, sedan, with some extra power. I'm not keeping mine forever....but I'm going to enjoy it while I have it.

I've actually grown to like mine enough over the last year or so that I have decided to keep it long term if it holds up at all. The car is very subtle, and responds well to minor tweaking in the suspension. I am most impressed. If you are looking for a low cost BMW, the Gen III SHO is certainly the way to go. And to top it off, you do not have to go through everyone thinking you have gone and done the yuppie thing by buying a "German Sedan" (bimmer, that is,

It would require some heavy beefing-up of the transmission and some engine parts to boost the SHO V8. If Vadim perfects this thing I would love to see what the first few months would bring to the guys who have it installed. It is fun to fantasize about it. But I am like some of you guys..I want to drive my SHO for many years to come so won't be strapping on any turbos for a while.
