Yes, if you don't burp the system by squeezing the rad hose as you put coolant in, and your t-stat doesn't have a jiggle valve or hole to let air get past, the air will get trapped at the t-stat and not allow coolant flow.

Is your overflow tank hooked up to the radiator? It needs to be.

The engine shouldn't have overheated to the point of boiling in 5 miles. I suspect something else is wrong...

well i checked the rad cap and it is leaking fluid out when i twist it off a little bit and the reservoir is full. I noticed that ever since i got the car the heat has been poor and never really blew "hot" just a little warm. I am gonna start with a Tstat just because its a cheaper route and if that doesnt help then i will turn to the water pump... new tstat wont hurt anyways

so... update... changed the hose the other day changed the Tstat today and started it up and let it run for a bit. Temp guage pegged... so i twist off the radiator cap (nothing) so i go and start adding in coolant with the engine running... as soon as i did that it started steaming from the radiator filler tube... well i fill as much as i have on hand about a gallon and a half and i notice a different hose is cracked/leaking... its towards the bottom of the engine on the rear bank right across from the firewall just above the exhaust... any ideas what that hose is for/goes to????

That would be your other heater hose. Did I not say to change all of them at the same time?

Yup. heater hoses. I guarantee you $100.

I would replace all of them while you're back there. Why? As soon as you fix the one that blew, the other one is going to blow. And you're going to facepalm yourself when it does.

Yup, it sure looks like I did. You can go ahead and slap yourself in the face now.

People! I didn't get six little bright green thingies by being wrong all the time!

Track the ends of it; that's what you need to get at. Is it the one with the metal part in the middle? If so, you're going to have to cut the crimp off the metal part to replace the hose, and hose-clamp a new hose onto the end.

I'm pretty sure that's 5/8" hose as well. You can ditch the metal portion, but you will lose the use of the sensor that screws into it' that's the sensor that keeps the heater from coming on until the engine is warm - it's not critical (or even used) for vehicle operation.
