Starter won't stop starting!

I put in a new starter and it worked about four of five times until suddenly it just didn't want to stop starting the vehicle. It just kept cranking and cranking even after the key was off and the fuel stopped. I disconnected the small lead from the solenoid and tried reconnecting it only to find out it was still drawing full current. So I completely disconnected it, removed it and saw the starter gear and bearing sticking out, they just wouldn't retract. I assume this means the solenoid is bad and wouldn't retract, after I gave it a little nudge it popped back in.

So can I safely assume this is a bad unit thanks to the solenoid? It's a new Remy starter, but I guess it can happen to any of 'em.

This happened to me once when I was installing a Y-Pipe. Apparently, I smacked the starter pretty hard with the Y-Pipe causing the solenoid to get stuck open. Scared the shit out of me! Eventually it became unstuck after disconnecting the battery and giving it a good wack. I seem to remember it working ok after that...but that was about 7-8 SHO's ago. =)

I think I'll still exchange it, just in case. I wasn't rough with it when I put it in so I can only assume it's probably gonna do it to me again later. It did happen once before this, but it only stuck once, after that it was fine for two more starts, I'm guessing this one is probably just bad.

I had the same thing happen on my gen1 with a fender solenoid. Be glad you have an ATX lol

There are two scenarios here, your solenoid is an electric relay that operates the Bendix gear. Either the relay part is constantly energized, always keeping the Bendix gear pushed out, OR, the shaft and/or drive gear is gummed up with oil and stays in the out position on it own.

Tom is dead on the solenoid is connected to the drive so if the drive gets jamed up it will keep the power on. You can buy the solenoid on its own, and when you have that off it will be easy to move the lever on the drive to see if its sticking.

It was a brand new starter, so it had only been in the car for little over a day, barely enough time for any oil to get on it besides what my hands smeared on it when installing it. But the gear was stuck outside the starter until I popped it back in by hand. I'm guessing something was out of spec and let it pop out easily, when I brought it back and had it tested so I could return it they said it was bad.

Now I just have to wait until the money's put back in the account so I can go get another one, stranded at home until then :frantic:

Luckily I have little to nothing to do other than the starter. And sorry, I put this in the wrong 'emergency' category, I was a little frantic at the time.

I had this happen on my 91+ in Las Vegas! This was on the way home after the Cali Convention. It was the solenoid on the fender that was faulty.
