.........and it is driving me crazy(er). I am taking it into a garage tomorrow for a look see, but would like any ideas from the experts (and even the not so expert!) on what the heck it is. Every time I drive over a tar strip, crack in road, anything at all, it squeeks. A friend at work has suggested it is a strut tower plate?

I would check the sway bar end links and the sway bar to body bushings. Unhook the sway bar and tie it out of the way. Drive around and see what happens to the squeak.
The control arm bushings could also be making noise.
Make sure it's not the back seat rattling. Take it out and drive around to check.

Strut is shot. I had it in the garage (a trusted mechanic, too!). I have already done the rear seat thing, and checked the sway bar stuff. The strut needs to be replaced.
