Well, last summer my '92 mtx started knocking up a storm for no apparent reason and died. Now, today, just for kicks I decided to try starting it... And, IT STARTED... It knocked like a bitch, but idled fine (no oil pressure light) at 1000 rpms... Is it possible something could be bouncing around in my head (on the car :) ) Thats where the knocking seems to be coming from, not a bottom end knock...

Would the car even run if I had spun a bearing?

Thank YOU!!

Sometimes they will. When my buddy did it in his Honda the car knocked like a bitch and had no power, but we were able to drive it around for 30 minutes. Do you maybe want to sell that car? You are close to me and I am looking for a project car.

Did you see the pics of Heather's car with the shim that came off of the bucket. Pull off those valve covers and make sure everything is OK in there. Sounds like the 60k gremlins.

I *HOPE* that the bearing isn't spun, that would be VERRYY bad news! And I would sell it, but I've already bought about a $1500 worth of crap for it...

I didn't see the pics, and I am planning on taking off the valve covers tomorrow for a little "investigation" Does anyone have those pictures around anywhere??

Thanks,

I have pictures of what GOOD heads look like from my 60k if you'd like to see them. If the car had a spun bearing, you'd know it. It would *probably* run, but you'd have huge bottom end knock, no power, and the thing would be running smokin' hot. I have bad oil pressure (being fixed soon, don't worry wink ), and my heads make a TAPTAPTAP noise, but no knock. I have never gotten any rod knock either. Try pulling the oil fill cap off, and stick your ear down there to see if the noise is louder. Take it out for a real quick spin if you can and give us some feedback. If you don't want to risk it though, don't. Let me know what happens and I'll try to help you out a little bit more.

My 93 Ran, and started the day after it quit with a spun bearing, but I did the swap anyway...the crank had damage.. just get under there after the shim checking, and see if any is damaged, you WILL totally be able to see if you spun a rod...

It also could be a collapsed cat converter. I had the same thing you did. I thought I spun a bearing but when in fact the cat finally collapsed. Start the car when you hear the knocking (when it is cold) grab the cat and see if you can feel the vibration in the cat. If you can, it is the cat. Go buy a new cat but first figure out why the cat went bad. Most likely the reason is your are not firing on all the cylinders and the engine is dumping fuel into the exhaust.
