Smoking from under hood

This car is driving me crazy!
I just fixed the cooling fan, and thermostat, and now i was driving today in the 95 degree weather and the thing was fine all day till i pulled into the mal parking lot and smoke was pouring from under the hood. I looked to see the overflow was empty and put water in it. then I got back in the car and ever since the Air conditioning it hot. It didnt cool the whole drive or when i checked it afterward. So if anyone could help me out i'd really appriciate it! thanks a lot. oh yeah PS... i did hear a hissing noise coming from under the car on the pasengers side but that could just be from the heat or something that has nothing to do with all this... anyways just thought that i'd mention that.. thanks again.. you guys are always a lot of help and save me a lot of $$ from getting my car checked!: )

I don't know what to say about the smoke. As for the AC there are two saftey switches. One will turn the compressor off when the car reaches a certian temp. another if the freon is low or over pressurized. So you may need to get the ac serviced. When you turn the ac on does the compressor clutch engage. If not it could be any of the items above. If it is intermitant than it is more lickly the ac pressure reg. is not keeping the system from over pressurizing and it is shutting the compressor off.
