For the past few months, my friend's 98 SHO has had a small problem with smoking. At stop lights you could smell something burning in the engine bay and when the hood was opened with the engine on, smoke could be seen comming from the front center of the engine, either on the exhaust manifold or below it. I thought that it was just spilt oil or something burning on the exhaust but after several weeks, one woudl think the oil would of burned up. Still smoking though. So a few days ago, he bought some engine degreaser and washed his engine off to where no oil or grease was on the entire engine. A week later, it is still smoking. He does not have any oil loss between oil changes, engine does not smoke and it runs like new. Any ideas on what it could be?

Forgot to add that the smell smells like nothing i have smelt from an engine before. its not a sweet smell, nor does it smell like tranny fluid. It just smells like random grease or a combo of fluids is burning up. Its not a major problem, its just something that gets annoying after a few stop lights after a spirited drive or after a city drive on a hot summer day.

Probably the valve cover leaking oil.
Ding! Fries are done.

 Oops, I mean, that's the winner. Probably right at the back of the RH head where the timing cover meets the head and the valve cover.

Quite likely and while I don't have the experience of Paul or Chris, having just spent a good deal of time under the car, I would suggest that a possible leaking oil cooler shouldn't be overlooked.

The oil cooler is the piece that the oil filter mounts to and has been known to leak from within or where it mounts to the engine block.

I had a simular problum with mine and it was caused from a leaking seal between the engine and trans, it only happened with the trans fluid hot(runny), the smoke was when the fluid hit my 3rd cat and burned
